I think need heavy mocks are laughable. Drafting a position over a football player is fairly silly particularly in rounds 1 and 2.

Who would have preferred we took Johnathan Baldwin over Cam Jordan if we needed a WR and not a DE? Baldwin was the best WR when we selected Cam Jordan. Baldwin was solid but isnt Cam the better pick no matter what position we needed?

If you are drafting in the first round your vision should be to draft a player that will play for 10 years and supersede need. By the time your 1st round player retires you shouldnt have any memory of what positions you needed when you drafted the player.

Nobody grades a draft after 3 years based on need so why draft based on need?

Furthermore, there is fairly solid evidence that 1st round rookies that fill starting roles dont play on SB championship teams.

If we do see the team draft strictly based on need then I'd be worried that Payton was indeed looking at retirement soon.

Assuming there isn't a disrupting run on WR early in the draft, this fanbase will REVOLT if one isn't taken if one of them is on the board at 18.

There's a fairly large "revolt" on here every year after the draft, especially the first round.

Yep. No matter who they take, there will be several meltdowns.

Personally, I'd like a WR at 18. But, I could see the logic of an OL, DT, Safety, or DE depending on what is going on with Armstead and Marcus Williams. Just not sure what position will be the value pick at that spot. I don't like any of the QBs really and I don't think we take one unless we can't sign Winston, but if we take one that means Payton really likes him and that's good enough for me.

I would have a meltdown if they screwed up the first round like they did last year. People need to let Armstead go, he is gone. Hurst is going to be his replacement and be the LT for 16 games with no INJURIES while some people wanna overpay Armstead to stay and play 8 games, WE DO NOT NEED A OL until the 4th round at least.

Who's gonna play LT for the 17th game of the season?

I would go ahead and start practicing for that meltdown now so you'll have it perfected by April. My gut says you're probably not going to like the OT we take at 18. Hopefully we'll all come to love the pick by mid-season. I do think we take a WR with our 2nd pick. Who knows? We might even trade up from pick #50 to take a receiver we had a 1st round grade on. My reasoning for this is that we already have a bonafide elite WR1 when healthy. Taking a WR in the first round usually means you aim to make that guy your Julio Jones, AJ Brown, Jamar Chase, etc... I can see SP and Ireland going after a complementary WR with over-the-top speed to boot. As I said in another thread this morning, right now I'm looking at a guy like Alabama's Metchie. I do think we might have to move up from #50 to get him, but OT in the first and move up in the 2nd to take an offensive weapon just feels more like a Saints draft than drafting a skill player in the middle of the first round.

First and foremost, I believe (and want) Armstead will be back for another couple of seasons.

However, should the Saints decide to let him walk and eat $13M in dead cap next season… it will likely be Ramcyzk that takes over at LT moving forward.
In the extension that Ramcyzk signed this past year, it includes boosters/incentives that kick in if/when he excels playing LT.

Ramcyzk would be the LT, and Hurst and possibly Young would battle it out for RT duties.
It would benefit the Saints even more if Landon Young were to win the starting RT job… because that could allow Hurst to move into RG, and put Ruiz in the bench where he belongs.

1st round Charles Cross...Miss. State. That Oline need to be built back up. Armstead a good LT but not dependable all 17 games. Peat need to redo contract. RUIZ is nothing more than a 3rd or 4th round talent. RAM is a stud. Maybe Saints can move RAM to LT and coach up Jordan Mills to man the right side. Then Saints can go best WR available at #18 or make a play for Calvin Ridley.

Easy answer, if we resigned Armstead........17th game starter Ryan Hurst
If we don't resign Armstead...............17th game starter Ryan Hurst. Like I said 4th round.

Correct. I knew this as right but I just love the idea of keeping Ram at RT. Landon Young will make people forget about Ruiz if given a chance.
