1. Payton Turner DE Houston (B-) : didn’t really know who he was when we selected him. After looking at the kid I think he can be an early contributor at defensive end. Cameron Jordan is getting up in age, but is still the heart & soul of the defense. Getting someone in here to learn from him while he still has some left in the tank is a good move. I would of rathered we taken Jeremiah Owusu-Karamoah, but he fell for a reason I guess. I thought he was a top 20 pick and we might have to move up for him, but he falls a good bit most likely due to his size at LB. I thought he was a Lavonte David clone and he has shown to be quite the LB for Tampa even though he also has size limitations. I like Turner’s measurables and he looks like he can be the quick twitch athlete you want at DE

2. Pete Werner LB Ohio St (C+) : we needed a LB and this guy has some of the traits we seem to like in our LBs. He comes from Ohio St and we have had some success with guys from that program. Michael Thomas, Marshon Lattimore, Malcom Jenkins, and Vonn Bell have had success here. I think running that 4.58 at his pro day is what turned a lot of heads towards Werner. That’s pretty good for a LB, so hopefully he will be what we hoped Anzalone would be but didn’t quite get there due to injuries. But if we thought JOK was undersized for WILL LB, Werner is just as undersized as well. He was a converted safety, so you know he’s good in coverage and that’s what we need from our WILL LB in today’s NFL

3. Paulson Adebo CB Stanford (B+) : we got a corner that we desperately needed. He comes from Stanford so you know he’s not an idiot for sure. He hasn’t played a ton of college ball, but when he did he looked pretty damn good. Hopefully we hit a homerun with this pick cause we almost need to. We don’t have much at corner especially on the outside, so hopefully this guy can come in and compete to be the starter opposite Lattimore. By far my favorite pick of the draft since I mocked him to us in one of my mocks lol.

4. Ian Book QB Notre Dame (C-) : an extremely successful QB at Notre Dame. He has the qualities you look for at QB except for not having the greatest arm. His best attribute is making plays once the play breaks down. He can makes plays with his feet running for crucial first downs. He’s also undersized, but we have had success with undersized QBs. I think he looks to be a really good backup QB. Hopefully he can be our new Chase Daniel, who was also an undersized great backup QB for us previously. I just don’t see him as ever being a NFL starter, so I didn’t really like taking him in the 4th round. I think you should take backup QBs in the 5th - 7th round. I wish we would of just took Jamie Newman with one of our later picks cause I think he has more talent to work with and could possibly be a starter down the line kind of like a Jacoby Brissett.

5. Landon Young OT Kentucky (B) : kind of reminds me of a more athletic version of Zach Strief. I think he could have the same career here as Zach. Start out as a good backup for years and then possibly be a starter at right tackle if he gets better like Zach did. He’s likely my second favorite pick of the draft. He’s a really smart guy that knows the game and could be here for a long time.

6. Kawaan Baker WR South Alabama (B-) : we needed another receiver to come in and compete. Wish we could of taken someone earlier in the draft, but at least we got someone we must like. He’s got decent size at 6’1” 215. He was pretty productive at South Alabama. He kind of reminds me of Tre’Quan. I really wanted a speed receiver, but I have trust in the team cause they have shown to be spot on when it comes to this position pretty much.

Total Grade: C+/B- : Not too bad, but think we could of done better job filling our needs. At least we did fill our needs for the most part. Think we could of used a tight end for sure and hopefully the undrafted guy ends up being a keeper. At least we didn’t get any Ds like that Florida St OT we extremely reached for a few years back. That was a horrible pick and I don’t see anything like that from this draft class. Not one of my favorite draft classes, but they can’t always be.

I’m ok with this. I not really excited with this draft class but Deuce pointed out yesterday that none of these guys were picked to start right away anyway. He and Mike D thought the only one who may see the field this year is the DE and that would be 3rd down. Figured around 10 plays a game. Also says the DB may see some time in dime coverage but everyone else would be practice squad or not make it. Said saints don’t have very many openings on the team Pre draft.

People are so low on Ian Book it makes me feel like he is really going to fit well for the Saints as he's already being doubted like his predecessor was when he was drafted into the league

There is already a consensus about Book and people have already decided that he doesn't have what it takes and hold against him the very same thing they defensed about Drew Brees.

The fact we didn't draft a TE makes me think (even moreso now) that SP has plans for Taysom to play a TE type roll much more often. Of course that is assuming that Jamies wins the starter roll, which is far from certain....but perhaps this is an early clue? or just nonsense....

If I had the slot how great this draft could be between 2017 or 2015...

I think this year draft gives me a 2016 vibe. Could be super underrated and having big hits. Or it could just turn into another 2015 draft.

Wow, you are a tough grader! If I go back to school, I hope to miss your classes. :)

OK... I will bite.
1. Payton Turner. Solid B. This was a bit of a reach, but the guy fills in the blanks when you look for a DE in a 4-3.

2. Pete Werner. A- . This was what we are looking for in a LB. Smart. Plays all positions. Can cover. Like a big SS.

3.Paulson Adebo. B+. A year ago, he was a top DB, but he sat out the 2020 season. Hopefully he can shake off the rust.

4. Ian Book. C. He was a successful college qb. Some mechanics issues. He is a great project candidate.

5. Landin Young. A+. Great value. Smart. Skilled Oline player. Hopefully he can stick at Tackle.

6. Kawaan Baker. B. Good selection for the 7th round. The guy has skills, and is not just a 1 trick pony. Good college production.

I really dig this draft. I was hoping for another DB, but the Saints doubled down on Adebo. I will admit, that I did not have much info on Turner and Baker, but the draft followed a logical progression.

Both Turner and Werner were taken earlier than projected, but you have to do that when you pick late in the draft. I see most of these guys making the team.

If that's the case, then we wasted this year's draft. High-round draftees need to be able to start right away due to the salary cap. It's too expensive to build a team with free agent vets, so developing high draftees is a luxury teams can't afford. Look at how Davenport not developing hurt our D. We had to figure out ways to manufacture a pass rush, and we never quite overcame that lack. I think they drafted the LB to be an every-down player THIS season. And if we don't get more out of the DE than we got out of Davenport in his first year, then we are going to take a step back this season. Finally, we need another starting CB opposite Lattimore. Not sure it can be Adebo, but, if it's not, we are going to have to find a FA to take that spot.

Yes he’s a Chase Daniel clone in my eyes, who is one of the highest paid backups in the game. And can come in and win you a couple games if needed.

He’s not Drew Brees!! Drew Brees was a bonafide 1st round pick that went with the first pick in the second round due to his size. But now with the success of Drew and others like Russell Wilson, Drew would of went higher in a draft held today. He single handily had Purdue ranked in the top 25 and didn’t have the talent Book had a Notre Dame

Mine:

1. Payton Turner DE Houston (A+) : We wanted to move up and draft our top corner but couldn't not find a reasonable trade. So we went for the best player available according to OUR scouting. And as a bonus, it was a DE which is right up there with LT and CB when it comes to positional value.

2. Pete Werner LB Ohio St (A+) : We needed a LB and Werner is an accomplished LB that played great against a high level of competition in college. He has the traits to be a solid 2nd level defender and has the measurables to compete at the NFL level.

3. Paulson Adebo CB Stanford (A+) : We needed a CB in the worst way. This guy is a 3rd rounder with round one measurables and athletic scores. Tons of potential and still young and raw enough to be coached up.

4. Ian Book QB Notre Dame (A+) : We supposedly have a QB battle about to occur in 'Metry. Neither of the two competitors are sure things. So without a true face of franchise signal caller, we need to explore every avenue and look under every rock until we find our guy. It cost a 4th round pick, and a case can be made that we could've brought in a player at a more immediately useful position, but if he develops into a real life quality NFL starting QB... that's cheap cheap. Totally worth taking a shot.

5. Landon Young OT Kentucky (A+) : Like QB, CB, and DE... Quality starting OL are hard to find. This position group should be addressed every year. And unless you willing and able to spend a ransom in draft capital to get a blue chip, sometimes you have to draft for traits and build your own stud. Whether he makes it or not, a 6th round pick is always absolutely worth the shot.

6. Kawaan Baker WR South Alabama (A+) : We have a lot of similar WRs. That tells me that we kinda have a "type". All players at this stage in the draft have deficiencies and are basically long shots to make the team. Baker played against a lower level of competition than most of the name brand receivers in this draft, and that did him no favors this past weekend. Still... every now and again we hit on a late round or UDFA ball catcher. Could he be the next? His profile says he's a fighter. If his mental processing, physical attributes, and work ethic match that, he's got as good a chance as any to make the team and develop.

Total Grade: (A+) At every point in the draft, when it was our turn to draft Loomis, Payton, Ireland, and the gang chose the player they liked more than any other player available at that time. They're all Saints now so I'm a fan of all 6 guys and the UDFA's. Also, I'd like to note that none have fumbled away a trip to the superbowl, so I have no beef with any of them. Lets see what happens.

How can you be a bonafide 1st rounder but go in the 2nd round...wouldn't that make you a bonafide 2nd rounder? Chase Daniel was an undrafted free agent where Book was a 4th rounder that by all accounts analyst alike were clamoring about how they were hearing his name being mentioned here and Payton himself expressed the vision for drafting him and what he likes about the guy

He is not Drew Brees but he is Drew Brees esque and that's what got him drafted and as a 4th rounder that's pretty good value on a guy with his track record and competitive fire.

He was seen as a first round talent that fell to the first pick in the second round. They are a lot of first round talents that fall to the second round cause they only have 32 picks and teams reach for players like Alex Leatherwood

If Chase Daniel had played for Notre Dame and went to a few college football playoffs he might of been a 4th round pick. I just see these two as almost the exact same kind of QB. We saw something we liked in both these players and would of likely drafted Chase had we known how good he would be as a backup. They are the same height, have the same makeup, and both have the same best attribute. Both can make plays on the run and with their feet. I think they are both the most successful when the play breaks down. I’m hope I’m wrong and Book is the second coming of Drew Brees. I’m just calling it like I see it and believe Book has a chance to be one of the top backup QBs in this league especially getting to learn from our coach. Too bad he doesn’t get to learn from Drew like Chase did. Chase says Drew Brees is a lot of the reason that he has been successful and is still in this league as an undrafted free agent. There is nothing wrong with being a really good backup QB.

Putting things into perspective here. Coming into this draft, I really don't know a lot of these players. This past year has been a very unique year because of Covid. There aren't a lot of hype around these players, except for the big name schools. All these names that was drafted, I have never heard of it until the time their name was called. I wasn't happy about it and was reminiscing about the 2014 draft and thinking a repeat of that.

But unlike that draft, the players selected this year were productive with their teams. The only thing that bothered me AT FIRST is not the players but the value at where they were drafted. Maybe we could of gotten these players later but the chances of getting any of these players later on are slim.

These players may not fit into everyone radar or popular with the talking heads, but these are pretty good players and I get the feelings some of them might surprise you.
