1. Payton Turner DE Houston (B-) : didn’t really know who he was when we selected him. After looking at the kid I think he can be an early contributor at defensive end. Cameron Jordan is getting up in age, but is still the heart & soul of the defense. Getting someone in here to learn from him while he still has some left in the tank is a good move. I would of rathered we taken Jeremiah Owusu-Karamoah, but he fell for a reason I guess. I thought he was a top 20 pick and we might have to move up for him, but he falls a good bit most likely due to his size at LB. I thought he was a Lavonte David clone and he has shown to be quite the LB for Tampa even though he also has size limitations. I like Turner’s measurables and he looks like he can be the quick twitch athlete you want at DE
2. Pete Werner LB Ohio St (C+) : we needed a LB and this guy has some of the traits we seem to like in our LBs. He comes from Ohio St and we have had some success with guys from that program. Michael Thomas, Marshon Lattimore, Malcom Jenkins, and Vonn Bell have had success here. I think running that 4.58 at his pro day is what turned a lot of heads towards Werner. That’s pretty good for a LB, so hopefully he will be what we hoped Anzalone would be but didn’t quite get there due to injuries. But if we thought JOK was undersized for WILL LB, Werner is just as undersized as well. He was a converted safety, so you know he’s good in coverage and that’s what we need from our WILL LB in today’s NFL
3. Paulson Adebo CB Stanford (B+) : we got a corner that we desperately needed. He comes from Stanford so you know he’s not an idiot for sure. He hasn’t played a ton of college ball, but when he did he looked pretty damn good. Hopefully we hit a homerun with this pick cause we almost need to. We don’t have much at corner especially on the outside, so hopefully this guy can come in and compete to be the starter opposite Lattimore. By far my favorite pick of the draft since I mocked him to us in one of my mocks lol.
4. Ian Book QB Notre Dame (C-) : an extremely successful QB at Notre Dame. He has the qualities you look for at QB except for not having the greatest arm. His best attribute is making plays once the play breaks down. He can makes plays with his feet running for crucial first downs. He’s also undersized, but we have had success with undersized QBs. I think he looks to be a really good backup QB. Hopefully he can be our new Chase Daniel, who was also an undersized great backup QB for us previously. I just don’t see him as ever being a NFL starter, so I didn’t really like taking him in the 4th round. I think you should take backup QBs in the 5th - 7th round. I wish we would of just took Jamie Newman with one of our later picks cause I think he has more talent to work with and could possibly be a starter down the line kind of like a Jacoby Brissett.
5. Landon Young OT Kentucky (B) : kind of reminds me of a more athletic version of Zach Strief. I think he could have the same career here as Zach. Start out as a good backup for years and then possibly be a starter at right tackle if he gets better like Zach did. He’s likely my second favorite pick of the draft. He’s a really smart guy that knows the game and could be here for a long time.
6. Kawaan Baker WR South Alabama (B-) : we needed another receiver to come in and compete. Wish we could of taken someone earlier in the draft, but at least we got someone we must like. He’s got decent size at 6’1” 215. He was pretty productive at South Alabama. He kind of reminds me of Tre’Quan. I really wanted a speed receiver, but I have trust in the team cause they have shown to be spot on when it comes to this position pretty much.
Total Grade: C+/B- : Not too bad, but think we could of done better job filling our needs. At least we did fill our needs for the most part. Think we could of used a tight end for sure and hopefully the undrafted guy ends up being a keeper. At least we didn’t get any Ds like that Florida St OT we extremely reached for a few years back. That was a horrible pick and I don’t see anything like that from this draft class. Not one of my favorite draft classes, but they can’t always be.
