The 18-year-old implicated in a dozen Uptown armed robberies and linked to the Christmas night shooting of six people in Central City was gunned down midday Tuesday.

Shortly after 12:15 p.m., gunshots rang out near the corner of Jackson Avenue and Willow Street in Central City, hitting Eldrin George several times in the leg and chest, police sources said.

NOPD: The murder victim was not Eldrin George. It was someone else.

The Times-Picayune incorrectly reported in today's newspaper that 18-year-old George, a well-known suspect implicated in a dozen armed robberies and the Christmas shooting of six people, was killed in the shooting. Half a dozen high-ranking police sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, including some officers close to the investigation, told the Times-Picayune George was killed. Some of the sources said the man's tattoos, scars and markings matched that of George.

The department refused to confirm the murder victim's identity on the record, however, as did coroner's spokesman John Gagliano.

This does kind of say something about what a mess the Times-Picayune has become.

The good old days where a story sat for at least a few hours until press time, weren't all bad. Now someone hears something from somebody, and it's a race to get SOMETHING on the internets.

So, George is alive? I guess the hunt is back on. Man your stations. ;)

Seriously though, that must suck for the family of the victim, having lost a loved one and then having him incorrectly linked to the deeds of George.

With "tattoos, scars and markings" that matched George, it is probably a safe assumption the deceased was involved in like gang activity.

Just to hijack this thread a little bit... the other night I fired up my copy of Super Bowl XXXI -the Packers and Patriots played in the Superdome... the game was played in Jan of '97, and it was so surprising to see so many players out there with nary a tattoo on any arms.

Ah, the good old days... (sorry, I'm old school... I don't think there is such a thing as a good looking tattoo -no offense)
