N/S B. Pollard comments on NFL future (1 Viewer)

How long do Commissioners serve? is there a limit? or they just are in that position until they want to retire?

If you are wondering when Goodell is gone he got an extension early last season to 2018 I think. The owners love him.

IMO, some equipment company is going to get very rich when it develops a helmet that considerably lessons the chance of head injuries. Also, I think you will see a ton of waivers needing to be signed in order to play. Waivers will become standard practice on scholarships and contracts.

No such helmet will ever be made. Most concussions are actually internal head trauma caused by the brain slamming against the interior of the skull during a sudden impact. There's literally nothing you can do to the exterior to prevent that. Helmets exist largely to prevent fractures and contusions. In fact, there are a lot of people who make the argument that helmets do more harm than good when it comes to concussions as they effectively "weaponize" the head in a shell of hard plastic.

What choice does the NFL have? I agree that the game is hard to watch with all of the personal foul penalties and fines, but what other defense does the NFL have against these guys?

The NFL had a choice, full disclosure on medical information regarding brain injuries as the NFL gathered it, as it was revealed to them. The NFL decided not only to hide that information, but actively lie to players about it. Had there been full disclosure from the beginning, had the NFL made players fully and officially aware of post-career consequences of playing the game especially as it relates to head injuries, the great majority of the players suing the NFL today wouldn't have any grounds to do so.

Actually virgina tech and purdue have devloped helmet that have been proven to be ablo to reduce the chance of a concussion by 50%

At some point, the league will invest some of the billions it gets into further safety devices and insurance for all of its players, instead of putting it in their pockets. The players are as much at fault. They are greedy while they are playing, yet want to sue when the playing days are over. There is plenty of money to go into safety and post-career health care, but everyone wants the $$$ now. They all want to have their cake and eat it too.

Also, I do not agree with much that Obama says, but he really hit home with his comment that he wants to see the NCAA do something for the college players with injuries. Many of those players never see the NFL, yet suffer serious injuries, including head injuries. The players are not paid (although they are give valuable scholarships) yet the NCAA and individual institutions make billions on their play and identities. Some post college health care should be instituted for these players. The colleges could afford to invest some of the money they make on the players that helped them make it.

It makes since that if you can dampen the collision by the helment gradually giving through layers, that the impact of the brain rapidly slowing down will be lessened. Problem is that players are getting bigger and faster as the equiptment is getting better so the results may be negated.
