Interesting signing of a formerly top-echelon player (who was on our very short list in 2006).

Falcons agree to terms with A.J. Hawk - NFL.com

Atlanta has agreed to terms with linebacker A.J. Hawk, according to Hawk's agent.

The Falcons are in desperate need of help at linebacker after losing Sean Weatherspoon for the season to a torn Achilles, and seeing three other linebackers -- Paul Worrilow (groin) and rookies De'Vondre Campbell (ankle) and Deion Jones (calf; played Sunday) -- suffer injuries. Special teamer LaRoy Reynolds -- previously listed as third-string on the Falcons' depth chart -- was called into duty after Weatherspoon exited in Sunday's win over the Panthers. The cupboard is bare in Atlanta, which helps explain the Falcons' standing as the league's 30th-best (or third-worst) defense.

Well, the folks at Falcons Life seem to agree with you: at best, they think he might bring some vet presence to a decimated LB corps but they hope he won't play. And Falcoholic said: "A.J. Hawk is old (32), played for a terrible college (State of Ohio University), and was perhaps briefly good about five years ago. Signing Hawk would be a desperation move for a team severely lacking depth, but he would be unlikely to see the field if Dan Quinn decides to make him a Falcon. . . . Hawk is pretty old, slow, and ineffective, and should only see meaningful snaps in the next few weeks if the Falcons have a few more injuries at linebacker. But that can’t happen, right? Right?"

My quick visit to the ATL boards leads me to a basic question: They're the only team in the division that's playing well at all, and Matty is dominating the passing stats. So why are the Falcons fans (at least on that thread) so grumpy?

Now, please excuse me while I go take a shower to remove the dirty bird scent.

How can we blame these injuries on the Saints training staff or The Greenbrier?

I'm probably dreaming, but all these injuries to the Falcons and Scam's concussion sure are coming at a nice time for us, with our first win and all.

I wonder this team has it in them to break from the pack, much like the 20-1 shot in a horse race, to make it a competitive division. Sound nutty? Well, they were in position last year, with a defense equally as bad as this year's. 4-4 with the Titans and Skins up next. Refs intervened in both games. I'm still prepared for that to happen once again.

Well, a little bird told me Weatherspoon had a secret work-out at the Greerbriar in the offseason, looking at a possible trade. The Saints' training staff had a look at him, and determined his 3rd bicep was partially torn, nixing the trade. Here we are, full circle.

Don't ask for my source, I can't reveal.
