N/S Justin Smith to 49ers [M E R G E D] (1 Viewer)

Justin Smith's deal

Isn't too bad. About on par with the Grant deal, so that should make it a bit easier to get a deal done with Will Smith. I was expecting the 49ers to really overpay him.

49ers, Smith 'very close" to contract signing
UPDATE (7:35 a.m.): Agent Jim Steiner, who represents Justin Smith, just confirmed it. He said, the contract is "agreed to, not signed." The deal will be signed today. Smith will receive $32.5 million in the first four years of the contract, which is more than Richard Seymour's four-year total with the Patriots. The 49ers tried to work a deal to trade for Smith at the deadline this past season, Steiner said, so they've "been on him for a while." As for Smith's role with the 49ers, "They're playing a hybrid of a 3-4 that will put the team and Justin in a position to win." Smith also strongly considered signing with the Vikings.

(This would be 7:35 am Pacific Time)

Every day that passes that Briggs doesn't sign is good for the Saints. If the Saints could sign Briggs, and then add Rivers in the draft, presto, LB corp for the next 5 years. Add a Lito Shepard at CB, and maybe Cason in Rd 2 to go with Usama Young, and suddenly the defense is looking pretty darned good. Especially if you could trade, say, a #3 for Dwayne Robertson.

If we have a WLB already in Briggs, why draft Rivers?

Rivers can easily play strong side LB.

But, you're right in that maybe you don't want to burn a #10 pick, from a value perspective, reaching for Rivers. I'll acknowledge that, from a value perspective, Rivers is probably a reach at #10. Maybe a CB would be a better selection at #10, and then LB later in the draft.
