N/S NFL fines Ray Lewis $25,000 for hit on Ochocinco (1 Viewer)

Its funny how rules change folks' perception about things. Ten to Fifteen years ago, no one would think twice about a hit like that. Now, it is soooo vicious and uncalled for.

If they are going to fine defensive players for making hard hits they should also give runningbacks fines for running over defenders. This is the worse rule to ever be implemented into football.

Defensive players can hit as hard as they want. There is nothing in the rules prohibiting hard hits. What they can't do is hit a defenseless receiver in the head or neck with their helmet, and this year they can't use their shoulders or forearms either. If Lewis had hit the player anywhere below the shoulders there would have been no penalty and no fine. Instead, he chose go high and hit above the shoulders, which is completely unnecessary to the game and carries a high probability of injury. Dirty or not dirty, the rule is clear. He deserved the penalty and the fine.

Man I don't care how you define it its a BS rule. From the time your in little league to college your taught to keep your head up and eyes on the defenders chin. Your also taught that if the defender is going up for the ball you hit him hard enough so that he does not catch it. Now your telling grown men that they have to start tackling guys at the shoulder pad level and they should let the receivers catch the ball before they hit them. A couple of quarterbacks get concussions and now they want to implement this new rule and it is really hurting the integrity of the game. Just wait ten years from now when every defensive player coming into the league has a problem with tackling.

Worst analogy ever.:9:

Apparently you have never been ran over. You can't really truck someone without putting you head down and making some type of helmet to helmet contact. It is pretty close to the tackling form that they are trying to take away from defensive players.

Nope...that's not the rule at all. You can hit a receiver any time after he touches the ball. You can hit him as hard as you like at the shoulders or below. You just can't hit him in the head or neck when he is incapable of defending himself.

If that's not enough violence for you and you're all for hitting players in a defenseless posture in the head, well....maybe we should just give the players iron gloves and swords. Throw a few lions and tigers on the field while you're at it.

Are you not entertained?

Even if the receivers touch the ball the refs are still throwing flags. I think they did it twice to Sharper this year in situations where he did everything right. The problem is that the rule is two vague so refs are throwing the flag anytime they see a big hit on a offensive player.

Gee, I wonder why the NFL is trying to get rid of helmet-to-helmet hits....

A study commissioned by the National Football League reports that Alzheimer’s disease or similar memory-related diseases appear to have been diagnosed in the league’s former players vastly more often than in the national population — including a rate of 19 times the normal rate for men ages 30 through 49.

The Michigan researchers found that 6.1 percent of players age 50 and above reported that they had received a dementia-related diagnosis, five times higher than the cited national average, 1.2 percent. Players ages 30 through 49 showed a rate of 1.9 percent, or 19 times that of the national average, 0.1 percent.

The rule is not vague at all...the rule is actually very specific about what can and cannot be done. You may be operating on outdated understanding of the rules (they have changed a few times in the last few years). Also, you are seeing the fact that officials are putting a heavy emphasis on safety-related calls now...more than ever. They are also being instructed that they should throw the flag if there is any doubt that a hit was illegal. Get used to it...the NFL's emphasis on player safety is a trend that will continue, not retreat.

That is exactly what is supposed to happen to WRs that go over the middle. This is football and that hit was clean. IMO.

it was clean but he was defenseless and wasnt making a play on the ball anymore imo.

thats football for ya

Hey, to Ray Lewis $25K is chump change for that chump. I'm just glad it led to a Ravens LOSS. He cost em the game and that is much more satisfying.
