N/S: Richard Sherman - Player's POV - They're Going to Use Us Up (1 Viewer)

Coming from a guy on a defense which hits about as hard as any. Humm. Ok.

Here's a couple of things to think about, though no one wants to hear them. First, a change in mentality to use correct technique in tackling and blocking. The lights out hits that guys try to go for (hello Sherman) need to be coached out of the game. Also, remove some of the padding and protection. Right now with chest and shoulder pads it doesn't hurt the defenders to lay a shoulder into someone to give a vicious hit. Lose some of the pads so the weapon to hurt is no longer there. Also change the helmet. Remove the hard layer and make it only padding. That way it will force players to use correct technique and not lead with their head.

Also, and players should know this. Injuries are part of the game. If you don't want the injuries, stop playing the game. Go deliver mail, be a mall cop, be a business man.

Meh...i know we are talking grown men here but as a Child/Kid i played FB because of the contact...because it was OK to hit people. I don't think you can coach ferociousness out of the game because it's a part of what makes the game fun.

Hitting and being able to take a hit is part of the game. Now obviously on a grand scale when its 275 lb men that run 4.5 40's doing the hitting there has to be some level of tone down but I think thats much easier said than done.

Football is and always will be a very violent game and kill shots are similar to a hockey check. You want to hit the guy...and you want to hit him hard.

I have no problem with that. Wanting to hurt someone vs wanting to injure someone is different. You never want to see a guy injured...but If i put a good lick on you and you need to stay down for a moment it means that I'm going balls to the wall.

How about naming the first 5?

There are a few names you can put on this list. If you are talking academic achievement, business savvy, or social awareness. I find there to be a a certain group who can mix all those groups and come out shinning.

1) Ben Watson
2) Drew Brees
3) Jacob Tamme
4) Ryan Fitzpatrick
5) Richard Sherman

Also, for people talking about hard hits, you are right. Players are looking for the knockout shot on every play, except for guys on the Seattle defense. In Seattle Rocky Seto has created a safer way of tackling, and it is slowly catching on. Many NFL teams now use his video in instructing their players how to tackle properly, and safely.

He's using his body to make a living first. It only lasts so long.

Yes, by his own free will. Some people don't love football enough to go through the pain and injuries. They should not choose football as a career and ruin if for others.

"The NFL, really, could care less." Sigh.

I think he means, "the NFL, really, couldn't care less".

One of my pet peeves there. Almost didn't post the thread because of it.

I agree with his point though, so I posted it.

Sounds like Sherman needs to follow his own beliefs and retire.

The stronger the unions and lawyers become, the less fans will recognize the game.

It's not like Sherman or anyone else is forced to play football. There are plenty of jobs out there for college grads.

You just don't get it,you are so far off base. The unions and lawyers have NOTHING to do with what the NFL does. The NFL is a separate entity, they make their own rules and are governed by a single man not lawyers and unions. I already don't recognize the game, they have diluted and polluted it so much it really stinks of nothing but profit at the expense of the athletes.

They are not forced to play but how many people go to jobs they love even though they hate the way it is run, a lot of people do. There ARE many jobs for college grads but do they pay 10 or 12 million a year or even 6 mil a year.

Sounds like he's describing me...minus the money and fame.

Yep, I know lots of weekend warriors, like myself, who have joint pains and don't get paid for it. I do think it is good that the union has gotten the league to change some of its policies to protect players, but past that, I don't have sympathy, because the league is treating them better than ever. Also, these guys are living a dream, and those that have a long career, make a small fortune. Even those that aren't stars make nearly 1M/year after they've been around for nearly 10 years.

The NFL is just too big and too powerful to be forced into any kind of change unless they do it themselves and then it's just tossing a bone to quiet the masses.
The players have gone on strike before.
The fans could all choose not to go and
Leave the stadiums empty. A fan strike
Would turn some heads real fast.
College football is better to watch lately
Anyways.

Not to sound like a heartless jerk, but if you're that worried.....find another profession. No one has forced him or anyone else to play football. These guys are payed more than most of us could ever dream of making. You don't think blue collar workers of all types retire with bad joints and knee and back pain? I'd rather play a game for 10 years and retire a multimillionaire with bad knees than lay bricks for 40 years and retire broke with bad knees.

If you can watch it, I recommend Vice's "Gridiron Ganja" episode of Weediquette.

If they really cared, they'd be pushing for research and change of scheduling. But as Sherman says, it's about the league and protecting revenue even if the players lives are ruined.

Here's an article with some of the info.

https://www.inverse.com/article/20692-cbd-marijuana-charlotte-s-web-cte-concussion

The potential neuroprotective benefits of marijuana are no secret: In fact, NFL players like ex-offensive tackle Eugene Monroe have been dismissed from their teams for publicly lauding its potential to prevent — and perhaps even treat — CTE. As the Vice series Weediquette revealed in a recent episode titled “Gridiron Ganja,” Monroe was released by the Baltimore Ravens in June for advocating for marijuana treatment. While he was offered positions on the lineups of big teams like the New York Giants, Monroe opted to retire: The risks of CTE — memory loss, aggression, depression, suicide, and dementia, to name a few — were simply too great. Now, he joins players such as Tennessee Titans linebacker Derrick Morgan and former quarterback Jake Plummer in a campaign to convince the NFL to relax its stance on pot — in all its forms and components — and support medical marijuana research, especially as it applies to CTE.

The research on CBD’s neuroprotective ability is promising, though much of it is stuck in its infancy. The Controlled Substances Act of 1970 classifies marijuana as a Schedule 1 drug and continues to make research on its derivatives extremely difficult for American researchers. Much of the ongoing research, however, corroborates the claims of a patent filed back in 2003: U.S. Patent #6630507 described CBD as a “useful molecule with “particular application as neuroprotectants, for example, in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia.” That umbrella of devastating brain conditions could cover CTE, too.

So you think my boss is healthy and happy and doing everything to promote my happiness? Get real. They want me to work as hard as I can, do my best until I can't do it anymore and then I'm gone. What is the average career of a roughneck on a drill team? How about a roofer? How about someone who lays concrete? These are jobs that will physically destroy a lot of guys also. Are they whining about their bosses? Coal miners? Deep sea fishermen also brutal jobs with high death rates. I wonder if their bosses care about them and how beat up they get?
