Raiders re-signed DL Tommy Kelly to a seven-year, $50.5 million contract. The deal includes $18.125 in guarantees and $25.125 million in the first three years.

He's now the highest-paid tackle in the NFL. Kelly, who can play every spot on the defensive line, is scheduled to replace Warren Sapp at the three technique this year. It's a shock a former undrafted player coming off reconstructive knee surgery would get a contract like this, but Kelly was too valuable for Oakland to let walk. This re-sets the bar for Albert Haynesworth, Corey Williams, and eventually Vince Wilfork to get new deals. Feb. 28 - 2:16 pm et

Wow... so, you have Warren Sapp next to you and one of the better LB trios behind you, yet you finish last in the league against the run... and you have the audacity to even ASK for $50 million?

Yeah, but then they give it to you. WOW!

All of these high contracts are making the cover-2 look good.

The cover-2 doesn't need top flight corners or tackles and it can get away with smaller linebackers.

The money on that defense is best spent on the ends which is where the Saints have already spent it.

Maybe grab some fast linebackers and another cover-2 corner and see what happens.

Might make the Pack more likely to trade Corey now that the price tag has gone up on him?

"The cover-2 doesn't need top flight corners or tackles and it can get away with smaller linebackers."

The cover two is based around a top flight starting DT. That said I've never even heard of this guy and that contract probably works out to be alot less than that in the long run. It's like people calling Clements the 80 million dollar man, when he's not.

This sure raised the bar on new contracts.. might just push some of the free agent signings back a couple of days while the agents try to squeeze more bucks from the teams.

Tommy who? Haynesworth is gonna make the Titans cry.
