The Union/Confederate split ceremonially took place in 1860 with South Carolina's secession from the United States under Buchanan's watch; one could say that Buchanan, Pierce, and Filmore (the obscure triumvirate, in reverse order) had much more to do with it than Lincoln. .

South Carolina left the United States on December 20, 1860. It should be noted Buchanan was a lame duck at this time.

Of course it could be argued he was a lame duck his entire presidency........

it's obvious President Thomas J. Whitmore

Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

That part turned my son into a Dylan Thomas fan. He memorized "Do Not Go Gentle Into that Good Night" :hihi: It was a little odd hearing a 7 or 8 year old quoting Thomas to his buddies.

South Carolina didn't start planning to leave the Union on December 19th, 1860 -- which is why I pointed out the other presidents before him. Buchanan's "You can't secede, but if you do we <s>can't</s> won't stop you" stance pretty much cemented his place as the worst president in US history.

I mean, I know he never wanted the job and all, but he didn't have to floor the country in response.
