NCAA teams are struggling with Covid outbreaks. How does that affect the NFL? (1 Viewer)

This is all about greed and the college players are about to suffer the most. Any time you want players to sign a waiver to play, it's not a good sign.
At least NFL players get a paycheck, so I can see it, but these college players get nothing.
I won’t be surprised if a large amount sit out, especially the ones that can declare for the 21 Draft.

I think most of the Ohio State players have signed it. I can see if you're already projected to go high as a Sophmore but a first-year guy on scholarship is going be in trouble. If you don't play, you lose your scholarship.

the country shut down (weeks later than it should have) when the NBA shut down

we are having huge spikes in places that had been relatively quiet in the first pass, but 'leaders' are saying they are not going to 'close the country' again
the only way i see to prevent an additional 100k deaths is for the NFL to shut down sooner rather than later
i'm almost certain they'll do whatever they can to at least open training camps, but i doubt it stays operating much after the first few cases pop off in TC
I bet the protests and looting had a lot to do. It takes 7 to 14 days incubation. What a coincidence. Without protests and looting the spikes would not be as a large.

It's a lot more than protests and looting. Casino reopenings and mass gatherings on the beach here in Biloxi are believed to be the
reason for a 23% increase in the last 7 days in Harrison Co. There were no widespread protests and absolutely no looting.

Wow, the states that the largest upticks are places where they rushed to reopen: Florida, Texas, Arizona, S. Carolina, Montana, Wyoming. In other words, there is no correlation to civil disobedience.

I really did want some sense of "normalcy" at some point in 2020, but I don't think we are going to get it. I think the NBA "bubble season" will tell us a lot, if it happens. If that bubble bursts, then the chances of an NCAA or NFL season go to ZERO.

I don't see how you can play football with the virus still out there. NO WAY is the country going to get to herd immunity anytime soon. On the vaccine, the government can pretty much force people to do anything. If they can draft you and put you in the front of a landing craft on the beaches of Normandy with machine guns firing at you, they can force you to take a shot. Also, on the vaccine front, never in history have so many scientists been working on the same medical problem and at no time in history has more money been spent on a medical issue. There will be a vaccine, it will work and it will be forced on people. If no vaccine is developed that works.....the economy will be in the toilet for a decade and millions will die from the virus directly and indirectly.

My best guess....no season. I really want to be wrong, but that would require a medical breakthrough in the next 10 weeks of monumental proportions.

Researchers are finding that even though a person may not show any symptoms, there could be damage to their lungs. If there is a lingering damage then that impacts athletes the most.

The authors also conclude that the absence of symptoms may not imply an absence of harm. CT scans conducted on 54% of 76 asymptomatic individuals on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, appear to show significant subclinical lung abnormalities, raising the possibility of SARS-CoV-2 infection impacting lung function that might not be immediately apparent. The scientists say further research is needed to confirm the potential significance of this finding.

Interesting take. They symptoms might not be apparent due to good conditioning and health but the damage still occurs. This shines a new light and danger on this. Thanks for the post.

That would be correct.

The chance of any football is nearing 0%.

If you aren't going to put these teams in a bubble, you have no shot at preventing mass infections.
Their best move is probably move the whole league out of the most infected country.

I think when a lot of politicians/mefia outlets pushed this as the new flu was pretty much the most damaging fake news that really started this delusion against it. The only thing they both have in common is that they can lead to pneumonia, but how they both achieve it are completely different. Covid is way more destructive on your lungs and we won't know the long term affects for another 5-10 years.

Yep, drive beach road and most most of the cars at the beaches are out of state, mostalt Louisiana and Florida. Just wait a few weeks when Jeep’n the coast happens and the 4th of July.

Nuts.

Have any players commented on a potential canceled season?
At this point, I think it’s still on without fans, but once a few players, possibly marquee players, start to comment, that may change.

IMO, bye-bye 2020, and LUCKY if 21 happens... there's no possible way you can play contact sports AND practice social distancing without a vaccine or a medication that's a proven cure for those who become infected.. I mean really, think about it, sweat, spit, body contact, are you kidding ??.. smh.. check them Florida numbers for further proof..

And don't get me wrong, i'm craving watching the Saints as much as everyone else here.. but there's no way you can not only put kids in harms way, but the future of the NFL as well.. I know there's huge dollars involved, but again, shut it down til' it's safe.. PROTECT THE FUTURE!

NW.

I sure hope its not canceled but the logistics with the virus seeming to surge wherever major reopening is occurring makes this season real iffy.

If the season is canceled, my biggest Saints concern is if Brees would retire. What do others think about Brees coming back if this season is not played

Wasn’t Brees signed for 2021 too?
