NCAAF may ban the chop block because of Glenn Dorsey (1 Viewer)

I thought this was important to mention because of the now infamous chop block incident involving Auburn Chaz Ramsey and LSU's Glenn Dorsey where Dorsey got injured and every sports writer and news caster subsequently went on to bash Auburn and call it a string of undesirables and infer that we were dirty and castoffs.

What do you think of this rule change, guys?


Other then it was an unfortunate incident for both teams and Dorsey was injured for a short time. Will it stop other teams from doing it just on principle

I believe Dorsey may be still suffering from the lingering effects. Anyway, I hope they do ban any form of the chopblock; including the illegal one that awburn used.

The chop block was illegal when they did it to Dorsey. The NCAA is discussing a rule change that will make it much easier to interpret exactly what a chop block is. The impetus for the rule change very likely is the Dorsey play which got a lot of airtime.

Previously, the chop block – in which an offensive lineman blocks an already engaged defender below the waist from the side or behind – could be considered legal depending on the place on the field where the block was made. Officials had to factor in field location and where and on the defender's body the block occurred before deciding whether it was illegal. There also might have been some confusion among the players making the block.

The confusion has been removed. There is no gray area now. Any block below the waist on an engaged defensive lineman will be a 15-yard penalty, and it doesn't matter where on the field it took place.
