OK... I'm posting this picture... If you look to the right you'll see the long fenceline that I have... I am thinking about planting iris' all along that fenceline... Really thick to where it is a long solid run with mixed colors... My question is this...

Would it make mowing and weedwhacking a pain in the arse and I'll end up regretting it? Or will it make mowing and weedeating easier?

Thoughts?

Joe

When I looked to the right, all I saw was my entertainment center.

I have similar situation and put bearded irises along my fence; weed eating is clean; you may have to pick thru every now and then for winter weeds, but if they are thick they are pretty low maintenance for a border.

i just mow over these once a year on high and they pop back up - too much shade so not enough blooms is my only issue

good luck!

Thank You Happy Saint... I am going to see the replies and debate before I make a decision...

I just hate when I weed whack the the twines hit the damned fence.. almost jerks the whacker out you hand and breaks the whacker line.

My Purple iris' have bloomed, my white and yellow have not.... this year will be the result of my "Black" oness soon...

ra- just put some fertilizer on it, and it will turn into a home theater. ;)

How about some English Ivy along the fence? Apart from adding privacy to a cyclone fence, it tends to smother out weeds along the fence without hindering the bulbs/tubulars planted in the same area.

Or, maybe some grape vines? Or, use the fence as a trellis for vegetables like cucumbers and peas?

Dang, I'm getting Spring Fever. I'll be right over with some tools. :)

The Swamp Iris is my favorite. Throw some of those in there too.

.

I've got spring fever bad... I tried grapes in the upper part of the fence... That ended up not a good thing , so I built a trellis that you can stand under and I got it off the fence.... So they could spread out a little and you can stand under it.

I also had thought about morning glories.... Just trying to get some ideas...

If you drove by my house. you would think that a little old lady lived there and not a long haired hippie with a harley.

How 'bout a row of red tip hedges?

No dad, I can;t do that... That is what I have done on the North and East side...
5 years, 30 plants About $200 later.... You have to look real hard at the back, but they are getting about 10 ft and still kicking it...

Amazing what some rain would do..., and I should have just did it all at one time, instead of making this a 5 year ordeal...

Roll & Grow is one brand. There's lots different brands.

Or, you could do it the step-by-step way...till it up... throw in some bagged potting and topsoil...roll out the anti-weed mesh...get tons of flower seeds and sprinkle them on top...cover them with a light coat of topsoil...water...bingo.

That's the easy part...

You got the right idea dad, but then the question become "WHAT" plant would be the approiate one... Cause you screw up and find out that youplanted the wrong thing in the wrong spot....

Iris' at the bottom with morning glory mixed in the fence... Or honeysuckly?

I am very leary about planting anything there since I have grass there now...

Years ago, that fenceline was chocked with bryers that had thorns the size of 16 penny nails... I cut them down while they were dry and rolled them into a ball using a garden rake... this ball of byers ended up being about 10 feet tall, and wieghed enough that you couldn;t pick it up, especially with those thorns...

So I threw a match to it... That damned ball of dry bryers went KABOOM and flamed up 20 ft tall for about 2 minutes.... After it was all over.... The cops showed up thinking that I had a fire out of control... "Nope, Nothing burning here officer.", But I got a ticket anyway and had to go to court.. That was when I decided to plant Red Tip Ohtinas along the NE sides.... For those nosy neighbors...:0034:

Morning glories don't really come into their own until August - October. Wifey did two trellis of them last year.

How 'bout full-sized marigolds in different colors? They get a two feet high and a couple of feet wide. They bloom from June to September too and act as natual bug repellants.

My iris grow quick. I have also found they love rotted pine mulch. When I planted them I threw some pine bark mulch down to keep down the grass. Now my irises are huge. I have a hedge of them by my house. The 99 cent bags of rotted steer manure and then plant the irises and then pine bark it, and you will have no problem with the grass. To me at least morning glory is a pain in the butt. It grows into a mess, chokes everything out and then reseeds itself so it turns into a weed.

What kind of winter temperatures do you have there Joe?
