Nerf - WT??? (3 Viewers)

Give your kid what he needs most of the time but you also should know that if you don't give them what they want at least some of the time, they will end up with much worse problems later.

don't know why Sgt Hulka made me thin of this, but i remembered something from classes i teach - so I teach beginning theatre (i'm sure we can all relate, right?)
one of the things i have to say each year as we start scene improvisation is "no guns" - not b/c of some 'no violence' thing, but it's amazing how quickly fake guns (fingers) come out when a person gets stuck improving a scene

I don't know... we have had Nerf mêlée weapons for years, and while my kids and I routinely beat each other up with them, they've never had a violent incident at school.

And they're in Taekwondo learning to use real weapons... still no problems in public.

does a nerf basketball actually bounce? If they make it to be able to bounce seems like it could still make plenty of noise on the walls.

Boys have this special knack of weaponizing even the most benign of toys...or else, making them the victim of other toys.

and believe it or not, my reaction was not so much "bleeeh, so many guns" it was the complete and utter de-emphasis of the sports stuff

i just know that when i was a kid, it was easy enough to point a finger with a thumb up and go "pew pew"
but playing sports without the actual ball wasn't nearly as fun

i'm sure most every poster on here has had some comment about kid today and their video games, but do you really think shooting stuff should be more valued than playing sports?

When I was a kid, our fake gun sound was pow pow. It was post Star Wars/Star Trek that it changed to pew pew.

i don't understand the fascination with buying children weaponry. our 7 year old came home with an arsenal after being with his dad over christmas vacation. i try to instill respect for ANY gun/weapon and teach him not to aim at ANY living thing. (the poster shooting his kid in the "noggin".... really?)

nowadays, kids carrying guns invite bad things to happen (get killed by police or trigger happy neighborhood watch guards). adults needs to THINK about the (possible) position they are putting kids in. there are so many creative, mind-expanding toys, why buy toys that promote violence for children? why not throw in a dvd of porn in their stack of toys? it's dumb. their minds are too young to process all there is to violence and sex

I guess I come from a different time because I grew up watching Looney Tunes and seeing Yosemite Sam going ham with his six shooters trying to smoke Bugs, dying laughing at Elmer toting his shotgun around and being tricked into shooting Daffy's beak off every 5 seconds and smirking when Wiley, with more explosives than the Taliban, still epically failing to "catch" the Road Runner. Yet, I never had the urge to bring some TNT to school or break out my shotty to exact some vigilante justice. My parents took the proper time to teach me the difference between reality and pretend. That while Yosemite trying to shoot Bugs was funny, real violence was no laughing matter and would not be tolerated. Looney Tunes was a cartoon and not real. Shooting people, or rabbits, in real life was not funny. Guess what? I never shot anyone or tried to blow them up with TNT. So, I'm going to give noggin dad the benefit of the doubt that he is teaching noggin jr the difference between real and pretend violence. So, rock on noggin dad. Nerf or nothing. Unless you guys are some psychos in which case I fully deplore your murderous ways and fully disavow myself from this post.

I got my nephews each a nerf gun for Christmas, not only do they love them but my cousin shoots the bullets at them when they are upstairs due to a cutout in the upstairs family room, boys will be boys
