Anyone else think we are planning on switching our defensive scheme to the Tampa-2 defense? Looking at speed pass-rushers like Laboy and McCrary. A MLB like Vilma is perfect for it. David is more suited to it, while Gay and Reeves are suited for both defensive scheme. I really believe we are going to switch this season.

I seriously doubt we're going to switch to a full Tampa-2 philosophy. It's not either/or "either you run the Tampa-2 or you have to play man-to-man 100% of the time". We can plan on incorporating more zone into our defense without being a Tampa-2 team.

Not totally switch, because it would create more problems than it covers. Neither DE is really suited for a Tampa 2, Charles Grant especially, and Scott Fujita might not be either. Also, I wouldn't trust Josh Bullocks over the top to help out on every play.

We may play more zone than last year, but I don't think we switch to a Tampa 2 in one offseason.

No, I think were trying to get more aggresive players on the edge to team with Grant and Smith....were not changing scheme's, were aquiring players who fit the scheme.

I think we'll see more blitzing from the LBs and (if we upgrade WLB) less run support and more pass support from the Safetys.

That's it.

Keys to a successful tampa-2 defense.

- Defensive front four that can generate pressure without having to blitz
- Quick linebackers that can cover a lot of space in coverage (particularly the MLB and WILL).
- Good coverage safeties

I'm not sure we have any of those pieces. We have no interior pass-rushing DT, and neither Laboy or McCray are pass rush specialists, look at their career stats. You could trust Vilma to cover the middle of the field in a Tampa-2, but teams that run a lot of the coverage generally have an excellent speed/coverage WLB as well. (ie. Derrick Brooks in Tampa's prime, Cato June in Indy and then Tampa, Lance Briggs in Chicago). Shanle is not really that kind of player. And to top it off, I don't think you can trust our safeties (Bullocks in particular) to consistently handle deep coverage responsibilities.

So what I'm saying is, no, we likely won't be making the tampa-2 our base defense anytime soon.

I think we are just looking for a pure speed rusher to move Grant inside for passing situations.

This is the only logical answer to our pass rush problems.

Roman Harper is borderline good enough to handle cover 2. Bullocks is nowhere close. That said, our CBs can't play man (other than the injured one) and safeties are easier to get than CBs. So focus on landing a quality safety or two this offseason and try out the cover 2.

Really? Both are 4-year players with 19.5 and 22 career sacks, respectively, for 2 non-starters. They made very few other plays as well. To me they seem like nothing BUT pass rush specialists.

Laboy's never had more than 6.5 sacks in a year, he did that in 2005 when he started 7 games. In 2006, he started 11 games and had 3.5 sacks.

Mccray did have 10 sacks in 2006, when he started 12 games. Last year he started 9 and had 3, though.

I'm not saying they aren't decent players, but let's not try to pretend these are pass rushing machines that, once brought in, will allow us to completely revamp our defensive scheme.

How about we change defensive scheme to a 3-4... We signed Vilma and re-signed Simoneau. Grant and Smith are already beefed up to handle 3-4 defensive end positions and Hollis can eat up 2-blockers inside...

OK I am joking, but what if...

I'm not saying they're superstars or anything, but all either has ever done is rush the passer. Laboy has had 2 seasons with 6 sacks and McCray has a 10-sack season. They're not Dwight Freeney by any stretch (a 16-game starter who does nothing but rush the QB), but neither is a complete player. Their specialty looks to be rushing, but they aren't starter material.
