It's nice to see that Kirk's phrasing on his solos are getting better. He was actually the weak spot on an otherwise awesome album for Death Magnetic.

My fear is that this has been engineered to sound really great on computer speakers and the like, and then when the actual album comes out it's going to be all compressed and crappy sounding when you play it through headphones or an actual sound system. That's what killed Death Magnetic for me even though I thought it had pretty good bones. Either way, this is the most creative and alive they've sounded in a long, long time, IMO.

Eh...don't get me wrong. Kill em all through Black were great years for Metallica. But that's where it stops for me.

I would suggest AJFA was the last decent Metallica record. Since then it's been Bob Rock over-produced "art". Sobriety may have done them good in their personal lives, but the singing voice of James Hetfield was better as a drunken 20 something than what he's doing now.

Maybe he should try to be a judge on The Voice.

Of course, this was recorded yesterday and it rocks.

If they went back to this I would listen to them again.

I'm about 10 years behind metallica as i was born in 80, but if you stopped listening after AJFA, you guys have missed out on a lot of very good songs. Yes, the first 4 albums were hits all the way through and their later stuff after AJFA were sometimes spotty, but they had some really really good songs.
