During the 2016 NFL draft, three Ohio State players were selected among the top 10 picks: defensive end Joey Bosa (third), running back Ezekiel Elliott (fourth) and cornerback Eli Apple (10th). Two more Buckeyes were chosen later in the first round: tackle Taylor Decker (16th) and linebacker Darron Lee (20th).
Still, none of those men has turned out to be the best Ohio State alum from that year’s draft. That honor goes to wide receiver Michael Thomas, whom the New Orleans Saints selected in the second round (47th overall) and rewarded in July with a five-year contract extension that includes a guaranteed $61 million.
This past summer, the NFL Network had Thomas 13th on its ranking of the league’s top 100 players, as determined by a vote of players. Elliott (18th) and Bosa (56th) were also in that group. If the list were released now, Thomas would almost certainly be higher.
