The National Football League’s annual supplemental draft has come and gone, and once again, the New Orleans Saints decided to stay out of the proceedings altogether.
They weren’t alone, as 30 other NFL franchises also declined to make a selection in the event, with the Arizona Cardinals being the only club to make a pick, taking former Washington State safety Jalen Thompson in the fifth round.
It’s been a while since the Saints organization has selected a player through the supplemental draft, with the last one being former Illinois quarterback Dave Wilson in 1981.
Wilson came to New Orleans in the hopes of becoming the successor to Archie Manning at the starting quarterback position, but knee problems threw that plan off the rails.
He stayed with the Saints until 1989, but the knee injury he suffered in his rookie season would keep him from being as mobile as the position requires.
