It took a while, but the New Orleans Saints finally agreed to terms with free-agent outside linebacker Victor Butler - the move that always seemed like the most logical fit for their rebuilding defense. Butler agreed to terms with the Saints on Thursday.

If the Saints had signed both Butler and cornerback Keenan Lewis in the opening days of free agency, they would probably be universally praised as free-agent "winners." Both players are young, up-and-coming athletes just entering their prime years. And they filled two of the most glaring needs on a defense that so desperately needs an injection of fresh blood.

Butler is still an unknown commodity at age 25. He spent the last four years as a backup behind stars DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer with the Dallas Cowboys. But many NFL analysts have pegged him as one of the sleeper free-agent talents ready to move into a more starring role. And no one knows him better than new Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who worked with Butler over the past two years in Dallas.
