In the lead-up to the 2019 NFL Draft, there has been an overwhelming amount of time spent talking wide receivers. Specifically the Saints taking a receiver with pick 62 in the second round, the first time this year they’ll be on the clock. That leads to a subtext that last year’s third round pick, receiver Tre’Quan Smith, was a bust.
That talk needs to be dispelled as we take a look at how Smith’s rookie season really looked with some proper context and perspective. We have to start by looking at what the plan was heading into the 2018 Season.
Of course, there’s Michael Thomas. That’s where all the conversation about Saints wide receivers starts. His 1,405 receiving yards in 2018 was a Saints franchise record and he’s firmly placed himself in the elite top three of receivers in the NFL. That’s your WR1.
