VooDoo SIGN FB/LB UMAR MUHAMMAD

New Orleans VooDoo
The New Orleans VooDoo have signed FB/LB Umar Muhammad to a one-year contract, it was announced by the club today. Muhammad (5-11, 270, North Texas) is a nine-year Arena Football League veteran who comes to New Orleans from the Georgia Force. He is an excellent short yardage running option, who also possesses outstanding pass rush abilities at the Mack linebacker position. In his eight-year AFL career, Muhammad has 92 rushes for 165 yards with 19 touchdowns and seven catches for 50 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, Muhammad has made 123.5 tackles (72 solo), 13.5 sacks, three passes defensed, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries.

We are excited to have been able to add Umar as we get ready to start training camp, said VooDoo Head Coach Mike Neu. He brings a great deal of versatility to our roster. In addition to his ability to rush the passer, he uses his size and power to get you some tough yards in the running game.

Muhammad comes to the VooDoo after he enjoyed his finest season as a member of the Force in 2007. Playing exclusively on defense, he recorded 35.5 tackles, eight sacks, 14 tackles for a loss, two passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Muhammad was tied for fourth in the AFL in sacks and ranked second in combined tackles for a loss, as he was a second team selection to the leagues All-Arena team.

Prior to coming to Georgia in 2007, Muhammad spent three seasons with the Tampa Bay Storm, where he rushed for 16 touchdowns during that period. Muhammad started his AFL career with the Albany Firebirds in 2000 and stayed with the team for two more seasons after they moved to Indiana. Muhammad played collegiately as a defensive end at North Texas, where he tallied 151 tackles and 19.5 sacks in 31 games.

The VooDoo roster now has the league mandated training camp maximum of 37 players. The club will start camp on Monday, February 4th with physicals and meetings, taking the practice field for the first time on Tuesday, February 5th.

On the Austin side, WR Derrick Lewis, the VooDoo’s top free agent acquisition this offseason, made 12 receptions for 184 yards.

VooDoo signs Muhammad

Linebacker expected to further bolster the team's pass rush

The VooDoo beefed up its defense and strengthened its pass rush in one fell swoop with the recent signing of veteran linebacker/fullback Umar Muhammad to a one-year contract.
Muhammad, 5 feet 11, 270 pounds, set a franchise record with eight sacks for the Southern Division champion Georgia Force in 2007, tying him for fourth place among AFL defenders.

Muhammad, 32, fills the last spot on the VooDoo's 37-player training-camp roster. Players report Monday for meetings and physicals. Camp opens with two practices Tuesday morning at the team's indoor training facility in Metairie.

"This is a good get for us," VooDoo Coach Mike Neu said. "He's a player who can bring a lot of versatility to our defense. We already felt we had one of the best Mac linebackers in the league last year with Henry Bryant. With Umar's ability to play Mac and to be a load coming from that position, that gives us a chance to play Henry more on the edge.
"To get that many sacks from a Mac linebacker is pretty impressive. He gives us a lot to be excited about on defense."

Muhammad, who was second team All-Arena last season, had re-signed for a pay increase with Georgia on Nov. 20. But the Force released him Jan. 22, and VooDoo officials closed the deal Tuesday, with Orlando and Columbus also bidding for his services.
Muhammad also has scored 19 rushing touchdowns from the fullback position in eight AFL seasons.

"The name of the game is to put pressure on the quarterback," Neu said. "And we feel like we just got better in that area with this signing."

Last season, the Force led the AFL in sacks with 29. The VooDoo finished tied for 14th out of 19 teams with 14.
