People seem to think either the AFC West or the NFC East is the best this year, but nobody's looking at strength of schedule.
While the NFC East is cruising through the AFC North, the worst division in the NFL, for four games this year, the AFC West and the NFC South are beating the hell out of each other.
When you take the AFC West and the NFC South together, and eliminate all their games either within the division or against the other (e.g., Raiders vs. Saints), the two divisions are a combined 24-9 so far against "outside" opposition. Five of the eight teams are have winning records, and the other three (Saints, Chargers and Panthers), the "worst" teams, are 14-19 overall but have a plus-44 point differential, and nobody really wants to play any of those three teams right now, Panthers' injuries notwithstanding.
I think the AFC West, top to bottom, is the class of the league right now, and we're not too, too far behind. It's not really indicative of anything, other than I think that if we can somehow get out of the NFC South and into the playoffs, there's really no team we should be afraid to play.
Man, let us not waste this year.....
