Hopefully we can talk Tommy Stevens into opting out, so we can keep him for next year without having him take up a roster spot. Is there a deadline on opting out? Can someone opt out at anytime?
August 1st is the deadline. I don't think we would ask a player to opt out to stash them. I think Stevens will make the team. If he doesn't we know the Panthers will steal him.

Not a lot of big names, although the Pats have a formidable list of players that will be hard to overcome.

When the announcement came over to wire it was a picture of him in a saints uni.I wasn’t aware he was let go
Yeah, back in May. So, he wasn't going to play for the Saints anyway.

Also, not sure if others are aware of this but if you opt out by the Aug 1 deadline, there is no changing your mind, you are out, but you get $350,000 guaranteed for the season and 1 year accrued towards retirement, so if you are a bubble player at the bottom of a roster its a smart move. You need 3 accrued season to be vested in the retirement system so the dude from the Saints who was on the Practice squad last year, gets a 2nd year accrued, about 70% of what he would make IF he made a roster, but only needs to hope to make a roster 1 more time to be vested. Smart move, since I don't even know his name without looking it up, that tells you his chances of making a roster.

with Wick and now Vander Laan both opting out (both TEs) the door is more wide open for Stevens to grab a depth TE/FB/H-back role. He just has to show up ready to be aggressive on STs and he should make the team.
