There are reasons teams rarely repeat as NFL champions and why the runnersup so infrequently reach the playoffs the following season. One is that they are targets for free-agent shoppers.

The New York Giants Defense, which sacked Tom Brady five times in the 17-14 upset victory in Super Bowl XLII, saw three starters quickly depart when free agency began last Friday. Safety Gibril Wilson jumped to the Oakland Raiders. linebacker Kawika Mitchell signed with Buffalo and linebacker Reggie Torbor with Miami.

Asante Samuel and Randall Gay, the New England Patriots' starting cornerbacks, fled immediately, the former to the Philadelphia Eagles and the latter to the New Orleans Saints. Safety Eugene Wilson is looking, with interest from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Tennessee Titans. Full Story – USA Today
