The NFC South race has been neck-and-neck throughout the first three months of the season, with the upstart New Orleans Saints just recently pulling ahead of fellow hopefuls Carolina and Atlanta in their quest to reach the division's winner circle.
In the month of December, which will begin with a home tilt against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, the Saints will go to the whip.
New Orleans made a statement last week, going to Atlanta and dismissing the favored Falcons by a decisive count of 31-13. That victory, coupled with enigmatic Carolina's loss in Washington, helped the Saints (7-4) wrest a one- game advantage over the Panthers (6-5) and a two-game edge on the Falcons (5-6). With a 6-1 conference record, Sean Payton's club also has a slight edge on the No. 2 spot and a first-round playoff bye in the NFC, with fellow 7-4 hopefuls Dallas and Seattle hot on New Orleans' trail.
