The only problem is it's from guys who looking at football from a 50 year ago perspective, While I agree with the premise of the article from the old school perspective. the fact is preseaon games are are way more important today than 50 years ago because of every reason mentioned. So if you aren't ready to play by the time the season starts, the preseason will tell it. And you will spend the first three weeks of the regular season spinning your wheels in mud trying to play catch up to everyone else who is ready.

Where did anyone in that article suggest they shouldn’t play 4 or that it wasn’t necessary?

The premise of the article is don’t get too high or low over what you see in the games. Yep, there will be good and bad moments from which you can learn a little or begin to form an opinion, but don’t go overboard, especially in practice and pre season week 1. The “mirage” is that you are seeing things that aren’t as defining as they might appear.

No matter the year, now or 50 years ago, it’s sound advice.

That's all well and good, but a proportion of fans will attach undue significance to preseason games regardless. Mike can preach, but it won't make everyone a believer.

The significance I attach is that for the past several seasons & most of Coach Payton's career here the Saints have had sloppy poorly played preseasons. The two exceptions were their first NFC championship game when they played hard in the preseason & ended up in their 1st NFC championship. The second was the year they ripped the guts out of their preseason game 2 & 3 opponents & I was totally convinced after seeing them rip Houston & Oakland a new one that that team was the bad boys on the block that season & would be the NFC champions. And obviously a 13-0 start helped. Last year they got by with having a pee pee poor start because they had the bottom feeders in the league to get by before the meat grinder portion of their schedule. This season they don't have that luxury. if they aren't playing their best football coming out of the gate. they could very easily be stairing 1-3, or 0-4 in the face. Therefore evidence of a football team ready to play it's best had better appear some time between now & the 1st game, or you'll be busy convincing yourself that 0-4 the 1st four games means nothing in the NFL.

We have started our regular season losing, the pass 2 yrs. So for me pre season is very important, for all our players. It helps our coaches find our weakest area of our game. We know our weakest area now, is pass rush, but what will will do to become competitive in the position?
