Nick fairly expected to test FA (1 Viewer)

Saints will make him a fair offer. And I get the sense that he likes it here.

But if another team wants to give him unreasonable money, he needs to strongly consider that. He's be kind of crazy not to.

Its a business and he should receive what the market will pay. And at the end of the day I think he will be a Saint for two years.

If someone offers him crazy money, let him go with our blessings, but if we offer him a good deal that's competitive with other teams, I think he'll stay. Don't overpay.

This never happens ... someone always overpays. Every time. I consider Fairley off the team already.

Fortunately, there are a quite a few good DT prospects in this draft... but I would rather have the bird in hand (Fairley). We just don't want to be addressing that position if we can help it... we just don't have enough draft picks. I am hoping to close some holes in Free Agency... not make a new one. So I hope that you are wrong on this one, Doug! However, I suspect that you may be right. :(

I read a recent tweet from Nick Underhill stating that Fairley will be seeking no less than 9m per season. Unfortunately I'm unable to load the tweet here. [Mod Edit: Embedded tweet]

Thought this was worth sharing.

Well it was fun while it lasted..

Only Brees, Armstead, and Jordan make over 9 mil a year.

Meh seems to be a case of the same situation with Fleener. The market has dictated (especially last year) the price for DT's. For his production 9mil a year is cheap and at least in this case you know what you are getting after having him for a year.

He was second to Jordan in sacks and now he's asking for less than Jordan appropriately. Just happens to be that 9mil is the going rate for DT's. Damon Harrison got PAID last year and he doesn't even have the production as a passrusher that Fairley has.

Just nature of the business i don't think thats a high going rate at all and he's easily the 2nd best lineman on that unit AND still in his prime and since Rankins can play NT too its not an overabundance of talent. Heck Onyemata was actually Fairleys backup last year.....Rankins typically swapped out with Davison.

We need to stop being scared off by these new price tags guys. $8m to $10m a year is the norm for a player of Fairley's ilk, coming off the season he had.

The cap is rising, and if you want to keep your good players, you have to pay the price.

We'll be fine with Rankins, Davison, and Onyemata. There are a lot of players I'd rather spend that money on. I think we'll sign a corner regardless, but not re-signing Fairley might allow us to go after Kevin Zeitler.

Unfortunately, a top tier guard in Zeitler won't come cheap either.

But he's worth the money. Zeitler is top 3 at his position. Give him the $10 mil or so that we would have given Fairley. And we can still sign a CB and some other positions of greater need than DT.

Defense isnt going to get better if you are subtracting talent. I want Zietler too but saying let Fairley go to pay him is pitting them against each other. How about getting some cap space from Byrd via a restructure as well as Ellerbe/Fleener etc etc. Fairley is worth that money and again its not a ridiculous price tag...its not like he underperformed and is asking for that money and its not like you have to project the player into the system and make it a risk.

The Patriot Way:

Excepting a quarterback: whenever possible, avoid having players on your team making top-5 money at their position.

It is rising, and I am sure that some team out there will give Fairly the $9m or better. Most of us as Saints fans are pretty gun shy about doling out such big contracts considering the cap hell created by the Gillette, Browner, Graham, Spiller type deals and all of their dead money.

That being said, I think that Fairly might just be worth it. I am just afraid of another episode of "take the money and run" happening! It's been a fairly common occurrence in this league over the years for a player to get paid and then under perform. I might give him that kind of money if the guaranteed money isn't insane and the contract remained incentive laden as did his last deal here. He is a player that I would certainly want the Saints to retain, no doubt.
