Why picking 11th might be better for the Saints than picking 10th

By Nick Underhill -- Advocate

Higher is almost always better when it comes to the draft.

No one wants to be in the middle of the pack. The only teams completely satisfied with their picks are the ones at the very top and the team that won the Super Bowl. Everyone else probably wishes they were somewhere else in the order.

The New Orleans Saints probably feel the same way. What picking at 11 means is they’re likely too far away to think about getting someone like Texas A&M pass rusher Myles Garrett, who would alleviate many of the issues New Orleans needs to solve on defense, but high enough to still get a good player.

But there might be one reason the Saints are happy with picking 11th instead of, say, ninth or 10th: It will cost less money. And not just in the sense that the 10th pick will likely make more than $200,000 than whoever is picked 11th in 2017. No, there should be significant savings, down the road, when New Orleans goes to pick up the fifth-year (team) option on the player it drafts this year, for the 2021 season...

This is something I have known about and tried to point out in past years. The 11th pick overall is much more valuable than it was in prior CBA's and as such, any team that might be willing to trade up with the Saints this year will have to pay more than they use to have to.

That Underhill fella. Always looking on the bright side.

So we basically have the #1 non top 10 pick lol.

NO! They Saints actually have the equivalent of the 9 or 10th pick in the draft. Reading comprehension is a wonderful thing.

Swap with a team looking to snag Mitch Trubisky at 10. Ransom

That's actually what I expected before reading it. Thought it was going to be about picking ahead of Cleveland at 12 and the possibility of a team jumping them for a QB.. Or something like that.

I should probably let this go, but I meant of the picks with the less expensive 5th year option (11-32), we have the #1 pick.

There is a point here that I discussed earlier. We know Cleveland is going Garrett with the first overall pick, so they should be considering picking a quarterback at #12.

If a team loves a young quarterback, they have to jump ahead of Cleveland. I see the Cardinals and Texans as the candidates to trade with us.

Chicago, San Francisco, the Jets and even the Jaguars may be candidates also, but I am not sure the Saints will be willing to leave the first round, and the price will be monstruos.

Unless they pull a move the Pats did back in 2013 (another top heavy draft that supposedly had a lot of talent early but it was the players taken in the 2nd/3rd rounds that ended up being stars) and take a big leap back (they landed Jamie Collins that year 25 spots after their original pick) and still land a highly coveted player.

Maybe Chicago wants that 11th spot and we do have a relationship with Chicago. We get their 4th pick in the 2nd round along with their 1st round pick in 2018 and then whatever other compensation we deem acceptable.

Slide all the way back to 4 and then take Tim Williams there. He doesn't seem like the type of guy we make a 1st round pick...just to many flags..but he does seem like the type of guy who loves FB enough that it could be the redeeming quality that keeps him in the league. Below is a list of some of the names that were taken 2nd round or later and were good players.

Dairus Slay
Kawaan Shortt
Leveon Bell
Jamie Collins
David Amerson - Now with Raiders
Eddie Lacy
Travis Kelce
Larry Warford
Tyrann Mathieu
TJ McDonald
Terron Armstead
Jordan Reed
Brandin Williams
Kiko Alonso

A few of the names that went in the 1st round that wound up not being good. Interestingly enough there are 4 passrushers on that list in what was supposedly a draft filled with passrushers. Having SP say theres only a handful makes me think we could see a similar situation....theres more passrushers waiting to bust than hit in this draft.

Luke Joekel
Barkevious Mingo
Dion Jordan
Dee Milliner
DJ Hayden
EJ Manuel
Jarvis Jones
Bjoern Werner
Shariff Floyd
Sylvester Williams
Matt Elam

Two 2nd rounders in a draft like this might yield better results than a 1st and 2nd. That extra 1st in a year would be value because there is no guarantee Chicago gets over the hump in the NFC west to get a pick higher than one in the Teens. In fact I could only assume that if SP feels Deshawn Watson has the qualities we like in a player and knowng Ryan Pace comes from a similar tree has me really considering that Chicago angle.

Edit: Houston seems like a solid option too. IT makes sense for them to go all in on the QB position since that's technically whats stopping them from making a run. They'd have Osweiler/Savage/ 1st round QB competing for the starting job and I think thats a good situation for them. We usually do joint workouts with them so there is a connection/relationship there as well along with Need. 26 would be in the range of undersized passrusher. Carl Lawsons, Charless Harris, Tim Williams should all be in that area.

It's a great year for the Saints to trade down, and I usually wish for it. This year, I want a top notch edge rusher, and guess they will all be gone by about pick 15 - 20.

I am not against leaving the first round for a good deal, not at all.

I think the Cards are the best bet, we will only be moving down a couple of spots, getting a player we will be interested, and get an additional fourth or something like that.

It also would not be that expensive for the Cards, who need someone who can learn behind Palmer for a year.

Texans and the other ones will be more expensive trades to do, but everything is possible, specially staying put.
