Shortly after high noon, an expectant buzz flows through the theater, accented by spotlights pointing to the stage and klieg lights illuminating makeshift TV studio sets hovering above for a panoramic view. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell strides to the podium, and it is as if he's entered an E.F. Hutton commercial.
Total silence.
Goodell christens the NFL draft by announcing the first pick. Boisterous Miami Dolphins fans react immediately, screaming with wild applause. Someone slips an aqua-and-orange Dolphins cap and jersey — No. 1, with the player's name on the back — to the stage where Goodell presents them to the newest face of a franchise undergoing repair.
