He almost got away from me. Died January 20th. I did NOT know he was Canadian, but he directed one of my ALL-TIME FAVORITE movies, Moonstruck. Quite a resume. Of course, Fiddler on the Roof in '71 and then two years later Jesus Christ Superstar. Also In The Heat of the Night, the original Thomas Crown Affair, Rollerball, The Hurricane.

RIP to an excellent director. So many good films that had so much to say. I know he didn't write the scripts (except for F.I.S.T. and Jesus Christ Superstar, though even that one was just an adaptation of the stage script), but a director has to understand the script to make such fine representations of them.

I remember how Spike Lee fought the studio slated Jewison to direct "Malcolm X" because "what does Jewison know about being black in the 60s?". Now Lee did an excellent job and it's a marvelous film (it helps having Denzel Washington, of course), but I think Jewison would have done a fine job with it as well. And frankly, imho, the film "In the Heat of the Night" made Spike's objection null and void before he ever voiced it.

I know he wasn't Jewish; his family were Methodists from England for generations; but with that name, it's extremely likely that his family traces back to Sephardic Jews at some point (guessing Sephardic because England) .

Just heard him talking the other day about him being hired to direct Fiddler bc they assumed he was Jewish
He’s got one heckuva resume

@guidomerkinsrules , hey, I got a question for you. It is perhaps rhetorical; but, who knows, maybe you actually have a thought. As someone who has never been a theater kid either actively or even particuarly as a wannabe dancer or singer, why did I have the sudden urge to start adding in expressive hand movements when a compelling musical theater song came up on my playlist? "Tradition" came on today (hence posting this in a Fiddler-related thread). All of a sudden in additon to singing along, I wanted to add in expressive arm and hand movements to embellish the storytelling of the lyrics, you know, for my fellow drivers around me. Okay, I've played air violin along with Isaac Stern before; but I don't ever remember pantomiming Tevye pointing out his head covering and prayer shawl before. I know you were born to dance, but this was about moving my arms, not my legs.

I guess I'm glad I don't have the "Oh! Calcutta!" cast album downloaded before something really bad happened in public.

‘For your fellow drivers’ seems to be the answer
Unfortunately they can’t hear you - so just like kids you are seen and not heard

By jove, I think you've got it! I sing as loud as I can; but then the light changes, and they just drive away.
