Ship Systems chief to get new duties

Northrop Grumman Corp. will consolidate its shipbuilding operations under one entity
called Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding effective Jan. 28.
The consolidation will merge Northrop's two shipbuilding sectors, Newport News and
Ship Systems, the latter of which is based in Pascagoula, Miss., and includes a yard
in Avondale. A headquarters for Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding has not been
determined, according to spokesman Dan McClain.
Michael Petters, now president of Newport News, will become president of the new ship
unit. Philip Teel, president of Ship Systems, will become president of Northrop's
Mission Systems sector, which develops communications and surveillance networks.
Northrop does not expect the consolidation to lead to any shipyard closures or job cuts,
according to McClain. The company's Avondale shipyard employs about 5,000 people.
"We just think that, over time, we'll be able to take advantage of economies of scale and
reduce costs and share best practices," McClain said.

It would be nice if New Orleans is selected as the Headquarters for this new unit.
