New system in place for defensive signals

PALM BEACH, FLA. -- The NFL took the first step toward eliminating the temptation to videotape opponents' defensive signals by passing resolution G-4 on Tuesday, allowing coach-to-defense communication in the same fashion that has been in place for offenses since 1994.

"I think it's a good adjustment," Saints Coach Sean Payton said.

Ostensibly, with communication in place between defensive coaches and one player on the field, the need to signal in defensive calls with hand gestures would be eliminated in most circumstances.

The spying brouhaha surrounding the New England Patriots' taping of the New York Jets' signals last season likely spurred passing of this rule change, which has been suggested as recently as last spring but never approved. Full Story – Picayune
