This thread reminded me of Clint Malarchuck. He was a Hockey goalie whose jugular vein was cut by a skate. The teams medic was a Vietnam vet who saved his life by putting a finger into the cut until he arrived at the hospital

Not just putting his finger in the cut, but reaching in and pinching off the artery. Like grabbing a slippery noodle.
