(CNN) - Ohio State University has officially registered a trademark for the word "THE" after a nearly three-year battle to clinch legal branding access to a word that's deeply meaningful to the school's overall identity.

The university in Columbus will use the word "THE" for branded products associated with the school and sold through its athletics and collegiate channels, OSU spokesperson Ben Johnson said Wednesday in a statement to CNN.….

 
This has been on the news here. You know it's 100% a money thing and that got me to thinking about that angle. If you're a federally funded public school should you be able to protect/profit from the school name? Seems to me it's a public school partially owned by the public.

Psuedo private institutions/industries are a pox.
Both:
-Public institutions operating as for-profit orgs.

-Private industrys heavily dependant on public funding with a stong lobby.

Total Horror Show.
 
Who owns the term OSU? Oklahoma State, Oregon State? Other State University?

Oh, and what pronunciation did they TM. Thee or Thuh?
