For Charles Davis, the toughest part of the NFL combine wasn't being timed like a racehorse or paraded about like a Chippendales dancer.
Davis had earned all-Southeastern Conference honors as a defensive back at Tennessee and thought his work in Indianapolis could propel him to an NFL career. Instead he was overcome with inadequacy, the result of being in the same group with Rod Woodson.
"Everything was so smooth, so effortless," Davis recalled. "He'd be joking around in line, and then he'd say, 'It's my turn?' When he vertical-jumped, you thought, 'Oh, my God.'
