is it possible that everyone is hating on our defense because of how good our offense is, its making the defense look bad. i mean we have absolutely killed the turnover ratio and points allowed vs. lions were due largely to poor special teams and most of the yardage given in the eagles game was towards the end, when they are throwing nothing but passes trying to catch up quick.

Here's what every opposing team's fan does when he has to comment on playing the Saints. They basically open up NFL.com and check the stats for total defense, see us somewhere in the 20s, and then think about the last couple of years and throws out the quick blanket statement: Saints defense is terrible. They fail to take into account that most of the yards that have been put up on us this year have been in garbage time and are to be expected when teams have to play from 17+ behind.

So of course opposing team's fans are going to throw slanted statistics at you along with assumptions that are groundless and flat out wrong. The don't watch us every week and they're just making their best educated guess on what seems to be the case. They also don't take into account that there's more ways to score than just on offense, so they see two teams putting 20+ on us and think that they can automatically do it too.

I have news for them, Buffalo's offense is no where near as good as Philly's, and in my honest opinion, not even as good as Detroit.

While I agree that opponents' fans tend to have a lot of misconception about the Saints, let's not do the opposite thing and overate our defense. I think we're much better but let's be honest, in the first two games, if we faced a decent QB the games would ahve been tougher. Against Detroit, Stafford made a LOT of terrible throws that any experienced starting QB in the NFL would have made (no way Johnson get only 3 catches with DC at QB). In week two, Kolb played pretty good but he also made some bad decision. Shanle's interception is a gimme, you can't deny it.
But as long as we stay healthy, we're going to get better on D and that's all that matter.

We are facing a decent qb this week. Hell, Kolb was decent. As Rise said, our O puts our D in prevent mode, and lots of meaningless yards get racked up. I think the Bills will be tough from the one game I saw this year. Also meaningless is our run D ranking because of the same reason. Teams play from behind and have to abandon the run often.

The Saints opponents so far have reflected the Saints in 2007-2008. They have been playing from behind, so they pass, pass, pass, and abandon their run game.

Yes, it is possible.

Besides the whole prevent in the 4th quarter stuff that is killing us statistically, it's just hard for a D to hold a team down when they are going balls out and passing all game.

Our offense forces people to do that. With that comes stops eventually and turnovers, but even the worst NFL teams can usually chew up yards in the process.

The Saints have given up 49 points in two games. The vaunted Giants have given up 48, the Ravens 50 and the Chargers 51. Just sayin. :idunno:

I dont think our D is quite there yet. I think with time they will come together and play much better, but while being improved from last year, they havent improved that much. The turnovers are great, but we still have the problem of giving up the big play. We have given up a big play for td in both games against rookie inexperienced qb's. Im hoping that we come together better before we face a good QB (they will be tested this week and next for sure). I think once they start to gel they will do much better, hopefully our offense can continue to carry us until that happens.

In sports, fans hate what they fear, and what doesn't belong to them. The fact that other teams fans bother to create an account here just to try and tear down our team shows the fear. They might criticize and belittle us, but deep down they wish their own team was us.

Our defense is making winning plays which is what I care about the most. They've been getting off the field on third down, forcing turnovers, and protecting the endzone pretty well inside the red zone. The main reason for our success in those 3 areas can be attributed to much better play in the secondary. Aside from that Desean Jackson catch, and the Calvin Johnson play the week before, we have covered well.

On the bad side, we have shown some weaknesses in probably the most important aspect of defense. We aren't generating much of a pass rush with our down linemen. I can understand Will Smith being slowed down by probowl LT peters but I dont even know who was protecting the other side for the eagles last week, and we were only able to get pressure from that side maybe once or twice the entire game. Not sure whats going on with Grant but he has been a total nonfactor so far.

Totally agree about Smith and Grant. I think Hargrove is coming along pretty good hopefully he can be Grant's fulltime replacment. I also think Williams is starting to take notice of the lack of pass rush because Grant was being switch through the game with Hargrove. I believe we might see Hargrove play close to 100% of the game when Klancy gets back.

To the OP's point, I agree with you. Our offense will cause our defense to be very low in pass defense, but at the same time will cause our run defense to be very high. I think both of these stats will be inflated due to our offense. I.E. our run defense wont be as good as the stats say and conversly, our pass deffense wont be as bad the stats show.

Another effect from our offense should be our interception and sack total should be very high. We have already seen the interceptions, whats going on with the sacks???? IMO if will smith and charles grant don't have great statistical seasons then they are overpaid. They will be pinning their ears back by the 3rd quarter in alot of the games this year. NO EXCUSES>
