I'm not saying that all of the weight he put on is fat, just info....

i have sort of been thinking the same type of thing but with our whole defense; watching other teams their players just look more explosive and athletic than our guys.

sounds like u was reading my mind on that one. smith and grant just look like they dont even hit the weight room. they should try and get in better shape this offseason, especially grant

Last I had heard Grant was around 305, Smith around 290+. Way too big for pass rushing, 4-3 DE's. You can clearly see that they were slow and didn't have the stamina they had a couple years ago. Idealy, Grant should play at around 290 and Smith shouldn't sniff 280. Each needs to lose 10-15 lbs in the offseason. You can see the weight in Grant's face and during an interview in the locker room this year, Smith had his shirt off and was clearly "plump". He had no definition and the weight looked stricktly from fat, not muscle.

Also, I am not too familiar with Gibbs but does anyone think he, his scheme, might have something to do with the extra weight? Either way, both are clearly heavier than they should be.

I think so because I doubt Grant and Smith would just put on that much weight without Gibbs or somebody telling them to do so.

If we go out and get some LB's in FA and the draft, and Will Smith and Charles Grant stay around their current weight, is it possible we could switch to a 3-4 defense? And didn't Gibbs coach it a couple years ago?

Charles Grant has not looked as good heavy for sure but I remember before last season that Grant and Smith were competeing to see who could lose the most weight for the season and both were down in the 270's and both played better. Our problem is that our LBers were so soft this season that our Dline had to bulk up.

Grant looks like he is over 300lbs. Maybe we should move him to DT.
I think when they told him they were going to give him a fat contract, he took it the wrong way!

I have no problem with either end's weight. Will Smith is fine. He is just as quick and it looks like he is getting doubleteamed and held on almost every play. Charles Grant was never much of a pass rusher like Reggie White. He plays more contain than anything but always does manage to push the pile and pressure the qb in that way. Maybe Grant could stand to lose about 10 pounds, but in the grand scheme of things, he is fine the way he is. If you want our ends to be more productive, get someone like the Williams boys in Minnesota at DT. Jamal Williams is a 34 DT, which is played much differently, but we could use someone in the mold of Sapp or Kevin Williams. All Thomas does is fill the hole. He does this well, but nothing more. Our defensive line has a 2 man pash rush instead of a four man. It is no so much the scheme, but rather the personel we have at DT. Ever notice how our LB's get picked up so easily on blitzes. A good DT, whom every team wants, would cure this.

It's my understanding that Grant forewent the players cafeteria at training camp and ate double meat cheeseburgers with tater tots from Sonic the whole time there.
My question is..where is the trainer or coach while this is going on? Leads you to believe they wanted him to gain weight. Sighhhh.

Wow... I'm surprised the "grant-lovers brigade" hasn't come to his rescue yet. Everytime I mention moving Grant to DT I get flamed...

I also said that we could go 3-4 and use the "now" overweight Smith and Grant as DEs in that scheme... sure we need LBs for the scheme, but we're in an offseason... and this is the time to fix that.

I think they're both overweight, but especially Grant. I do believe they'd be quicker and more effective rushing the passer if they trimmed down. I'm hoping Payton will make conditioning a priority during this offseason and upcoming TC. I think this last TC, in particular, was too soft, which is one of the reasons for our terrible start.

Both need to lose weight. Their increased girth this past season certainly coincided with the down-turn in pass rush effectiveness.

I still think we need to bring in a pass-rush specialist DE either in FA (Suggs?) or Draft (Groves?). Grant could slide to DT on obvious passing downs.
