Ozark season 3 this Friday 3/27/2020 (2 Viewers)

I know all about the difference.
As it’s been written Marty and Wendy have their own personality issues lol. Glass houses and such.

And I will, for whatever reason I feel no sympathy for Ben. With how it’s been portrayed.
ETA:
He leaves and heads to the casino after being told how much of a bad idea that is. One thing is without doubt imo, he’s definitely written to be extremely ignorant and naive.
I think you’re responding to the same Ben problems I had but from a different vantage- in my long spoiler critique, I called Ben a macguffin. He’s just there to through dramatic tension into the story where it’s most effective
To the actor’s credit he makes him a legitimately interesting character (unlike Erin whose character has similar issues)

I definitely agree that he is a good actor and portrayed the character well.

I’m just asserting that he’s written tremendously naive and ignorant imo. And that is not because he is bi-polar.

Well the show signals a few times that he has arrested development (sorry for the pun) of his teenage age year
But what I’m arguing is that what you’re trying to parse as ‘is it bipolar or just selfishness’ is moot bc I don’t think his ‘decision’ to go to the casino (either for Ruth or Wendy) were actual character decisions- the writers just needed/wanted the excuse to ramp up the drama

Separate from naive and ignorant or is that all because of his mental illness?
I’m not trying to win your approval or get you to think as I do, just as you won’t sway my thoughts as well.

That was a fantastic ride, wonderful show.

Dude, it's a TV show, not real life.

We can take the commentary of mental illness people versus non-mental illness people's decision making to another thread. In this case, the writers of Ozark are attributing Ben's choices to his medical condition. End of story.

Move on! lol

I thought the show did a great job portraying Ben as bipolar. After scrolling through the last page of comments, I think they absolutely nailed it. It's as if Ben is getting the treatment of a real life person with bipolar disorder.

I worked in a treatment facilities for many years and empathize with how many of you feel towards this character - annoyed, dismissive, and even pitiful. Patients with manic depression can be charming yet irritating. They seem childishly immature and selfish, yet loving and caring.

Whether or not you are interested in psychologically categorizing this behavior, it's societal effect remains the same, and the reaction is as polarizing as the manifestation itself.

This show sticks with you for sure. I'm in the shower today thinking about Darlene meeting big Frank after handling Frank jr and find myself wondering if that's how it would play out in real life. Mob loves money but typically will pass on money to get even and protect family.

This wasn’t onscreen but my head canon has it that frank getting his *** handed to him by a bean counter was the last straw - he couldn’t protect frank he anymore

Touché.
I’m not at all upset tho lol. Just my opinion.
The show is incredible.

How often do you think of Darlene while showering? ?

"Fricking birtch wolf"

I'm going to try my best to work that into my vocabulary in the future.

Today...is our beginning

WOW.

It was a one time deal haha....I just couldn't get past the mob letting her walk off that lot after what she did to the boss' son. My money is still on that not happening in real life.

I thought this season was really good. If I may add some of my own takes I don't think we've touched yet.
1. Maya Miller. There hasn't been a lot said about her in this thread so far. I see her as a mirror image of Marty Byrde (it's Byrde with an "e") and that much will become even more clear next season. She's just as smart as he is. She knows all the tricks he's using and he know she knows. She also knows that he's unlikely to make the mistakes that would allow her to pursue charges. And he know she knows this. They are incredibly evenly matched. They both want to win for reasons that began as emotional responses to dealing with their dads. They have very similar temperaments. They think the same. As the saying goes, game recognizes game. Marty gave her nod when he acknowledged that he knew she was responsible for the red flag that sent everyone else into panic mode. It could have only been her. She's the only person that knew that only he would know what to do, proving his value. They know that they're better at what they do than anyone else around and that can make for a lonely life. We've seen how Marty had drifted away from his wife in season 1 onward. Now, he has someone that gets him, someone on the same level. I don't think it's a mistake that Maya is pregnant, pushed hard to be in the field out of DC, and doesn't wear a wedding ring. She's Marty...but on the other side.

2. Darlene Snell. I hate to say it, but the woman has grown on me, LOL. I feel like she had some of the best quotes of the season. "maybe she's having hallucinations...all those hormones and breast milk are playing tricks on her", "I can't have some women out there hocked up on breast milk slandering me". You best believe the KC mob is going to take her up on her offer if for no other reason because they share a common enemy (the Byrdes).

3. Wyatt Langmore. Dear God, man...seriously. But whatever, he's very smart and finally coming out of that fog of self-hate. The kid has the potential to be a force. With the love and encouragement of Ruth and Darlene, if he applies himself he could bring back "respectability" to the Langmore name.

The worst part of that show is now I have to wait a year to see new ones. It's a fantastic show with great writing. I think Marty's trip to Mexico is what convinced Navarro how valuable he is. He was always going to pick him over Helen after that. Them ending the war was huge also because Navarro was at the breaking point.

Yep. If Wendy Byrde got one thing right this season (and she did only get this one thing right) it was easily the perfect time to get it right. And it ends up being the most critically important idea of the season. Which is why I'm surprised that it didn't occur to Marty...or Maya. Everyone knows this was a retaliation hit. Why didn't someone think of this sooner?

Calling Ben ignorant and naive because of his mental illness is like calling someone who's legally blind ignorant and naive for not comprehending the large print on a sign warning that the walk bridge is out.

There is definitely a hannibal/will + raylan/boyd dynamic between Marty and fbi lady

darlene has NOT grown on me, but I like Wyatt a lot

i think s4 REALLY wants to have Ruth set against Marty until a last minute save from Darlene/kc- I hope they don’t go that way, but that’s where the signs point
