Carolina expects to be active in free agency

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said the team's salary-cap status won't be hampered by placing the franchise tag on offensive tackle Jordan Gross.

If the Panthers had been able to strike a long-term deal with Gross, his cap number probably would've been substantially less than the $7.45 million one-year tender the team is having to count now that he's been tagged.

But Hurney said at the NFL scouting combine that the Panthers were prepared for this possibility.
