Patriotswire writer proposes trade idea for Chris Olave (109 Viewers)

I don't think Olave has a long future in the league because of concussions, so I'd be tempted to move on from him. But that proposal seems pretty bad considering his production.

It would need to be more like:

Pats #4, #38 and Joe Milton

Saints #9, #71 and Chris Olave

They get the better immediate player, swap firsts and swap their 2nd for our 3rd.

Hard to see that happening. I would gladly take a 2nd round for him
2nd is about the sweet spot for his value right now. If you would’ve asked me before this year, I would’ve said a 1st, but his concussions are a concern at this point. I still think he has a bright future ahead of him. I’d like to do him right by sending him to a team that needs a complimentary WR and not a true #1

Patriots receive:

  • WR Chris Olave
  • Pick No. 9
  • Pick No. 129
Saints receive:

  • Pick No. 4
  • Pick No. 144

I am not a fan of the trade composition for Chris Olave. I would like to see additional pick(s) so we could address other needs. What do you think?

I have no idea why the Saints would want to make that deal or why anyone other than the Patriots and their fans would want to make that deal. It would be dumb to trade Olave to essentially move up 5 spots in the first and 15 spots in the 4th round.

Or we could get a true #1 WR and have Olave as a great #2 WR. I think you let this year play out and see if his concussion issues have been dealt with. Then you can decide if you extend him or trade him.

I wouldn’t be opposed to a trade involving Olave but this isn’t enough.

Wouldn’t be able to trade him next year unless the Saints apply the 5th year option this year which would be risky due to the concussion issue.

I've never been an Olave fan. I like WRs who are adequate blockers and can be a threat after the catch. That's not Olave at all. His game is similar to Brandin Cooks, IMO.

The trouble with giving him another year is that this is his contract year. I realize we could take the 5th year option on him, and I'm not sure how the economics work on taking the 5th year option and then seeking a trade. I suppose that's possible. And if the logistics work, maybe that's a better way to go to potentially maximize his value.

I'd also want better compensation than what's being proposed on this Patriots forum. But I'm definitely interested in trading him and getting appropriate value sooner rather than later.

The only way you do something like that is if there's a generational player 5 spots ahead of you. For a QB or elite edge rusher maybe. Other than that, I just don't see this as adequate compensation.

And you only do that if they are on the clock at that QB or generation Edge rusher is on the board when they pick. I might make that trade if Ward or Carter is on the board when they pick. But those might be the only two I would do it for. Maybe Graham. Although Carter has a stress fracture in his foot that will need to be medically cleared.

I don't have an issue with trading Olave this year in principle, but it would need it to be for a late first or early second. And that is not likely to happen this year because of his medical situation. The deal proposed I would only do if Ward, Carter, or maybe Graham was on the board when they pick.

While Olave isn't ideal as a #1 WR. He had two 1,000 yard seasons before he got hurt last year and he would be a great #2 WR if used properly and I think Moore will. So, if he was 100% healthy, I see no reason to trade him especially when this is not a particularly great WR class. But, since he does have the concussion issue, I would trade him for the right offer.

But, I'm also fine with playing him this year and seeing where we are at the trade deadline. Or just pick up his 5th year option and then trade him.

The problem is that if we trade him now, he's at the floor of his value. If he comes back healthy next year, his trade value is going to go up. And if he doesn't and he gets concussed again, you've only lost the 3rd or 4th you could get for him this year. I'd rather have him for a year and take the chance on getting a much higher pick while risking losing a 3rd or 4th, than trading him for a 3rd or 4th this year.

When is the deadline to pickup the option?

Regardless the team is going to have the medical information on the concussion issue so they are in a better position to know how big of a risk it is.

Adequate compensation?

Olave is a #2 at best reciever who is about to get paid and is one hit away from retirement.

Sell while you still can.

Not a bust but he's in the same territory as Brandon Cooks for us. Not gamechanging in the way we thought he'd be, and Cooks had a concussion w/ us as well if I'm not mistaken.

Olave's had 5 documented concussions. Didn't realize that, don't they become easier to get?
I'm okay with his production, but I didn't realize he had two at OSU before the draft.

I'd rather sell a year early than a year late.

If he gets another concussion you're not getting anything outside a 6th rounder for him.
