N/S Pats file tampering charges vs. Texans (1 Viewer)

Belichick smells draft picks. The Pats may lose Caserio but getting a couple of the Texans top draft picks would be sweet compensation. From what I’ve heard this situation may have been engineered by Belichick to get draft picks in exchange for Caserio.
That actually sounds exactly like something he would do.
He's always one step ahead.

The NFL really needs to standardize some positions and contracts so that teams don't keep poaching each others staff for what amounts to lateral moves. There has been sort of a gentleman's agreement but it has been breaking down. I'm not sure if it should be that complicated but at the least for GM and Head Coach, you shouldn't be able to pry them away from another team by giving them some paper title, like "Associate Head Coach" or "President of Football Operations" if they are going to do the same job.

On the other hand, staff should not be blocked from getting promotions from another team. So for instance, a linebackers coach should be able to interview for a Defensive Coordinator job, but not just a lateral move where they are still the linebackers coach but given some additional title like "Defensive Quality Control Specialist" or some nonsense.

Take for instance, Jeff Ireland. If some other team wants him to be GM, great, good luck. But if they just want to poach him for his draft acumen and to do the same job he does with the Saints, then I'd say no way.

When I first read it, I thought it was the other way around...Patriots were found guilty again of that crap...I was like...wow......

What is the state of NFL coaching and FO going to come to when Belichick hangs it up? He's singlehandedly turned being an OK assistant into gold...

IMO coaching standards should go up considerably.

Turns out Caserio’s contract with the Pats is written with the language he can’t take another job in the NFL. Sounds very illegal/marginal indentured servant but Caserio had the option NOT to sign it. Just one more way Belichick and the Pats push the very boundaries of the league. As the old NASCAR saying goes -“If you ain’t cheatin’, you ain’t tryin’”.

After seeing this I imagine every team in the league is drawing up new contracts for all their top execs. Mickey Loomis to Jeff Ireland this afternoon “Hey Jeff stop by my office after lunch and bring a pen”

That clause is likely non-enforcable, as it essentially a non-compete. Although the Patriots could complain to the Goodell who could internally punish the Texans, then the Texans would have to go to court.

Edit: Actually I think it would be enforceable. Since Caserio is under a contract(which runs out in 2020), and not just a regular employee. Otherwise the same thing would go for players ...
