This would be my list after this season. I'm not here to talk about Les's seasons at Ok St. just like I'm not here to discuss Meyer at Bowling Green. Sure their past programs may have been different but I'm talking about coaches in the now. If you want to go that far back and discuss then you need to look at Saban's 6 win seasons at Michigan St. and so on...

If your talking about coaches in the now I don't see how you can put Saban ahead of Richt?

I don't know - I am not trying to diss Miles, his record speaks for itself. But something in the back of my mind tells me that if Richt, Spurrier, or Meyer had the talent Miles had in the last couple of years that there would be maybe another SEC Championship and not a 2-loss national title.
I doubt that any one coach has put more talent in college football than Richt since he's been at UGA. I recall an article a couple years ago that placed UGA just above Miami, Texas and USC in terms of current players in the NFL in a range of the last few years. He's had more than enough talent to win a MNC.

How can Spurrier, who did not get to a bowl game, be ranked ahead of Croom who won a bowl game? This is supposed to be who the best coach is right now, but that applies neither to Spurrier nor Saban.

I don't see what Spurrier has done that is so great. SC went to crappy bowl games under Lou Holtz. It's not like he's raised the bar.
You know, if that list was in terms of how the coaches did this year, it's completely screwed up. Saban should be dead last for his loss to ULM and Les at anything except #1 is a disgrace. You can't get any better than taking a two loss team to a Nat'l Title.

The differences between the top "coaches" are pretty razor thin. Some coaches are better at recruiting, some on offense, some on defense, etc. But the total value of the coaches are pretty close.

Mark Richt at #1 is a joke. He is a great coach, and I am pretty sure he will win it all one day. However till he wins it all, he doesn't deserve to be ranked higher than Saban, Spurrier, Miles, and Meyer. (However, I would put him ahead of Fulmer, because his best days are behind him IMO.)

Spurrier is a great coach, but at a crappy program. He doesn't seem to have as much to prove anymore and just isn't the same guy, so I would knock him near Richt territory cause he has lost that fire to a degree.

I think Saban would be the better coach, except he's lost that trust factor. Miles has a great reputation, and Saban torched his. I think Miles can do a better job in recruiting and you can have more faith that he will actually stick around for 5 years to finish out your career. Therefore I think that bumps Miles over Saban. (I'm surprised I am picking Miles this high, but dude is really growing into the program and learn the SEC way. And if he continues to grow? Whoa, look out!)

Tubberville vs Richt is a really tough choice for me. They are about the same. Both really have something to prove, and they will work their fannies off to get that title. I hate tubberware, and I'd rather have Richt as my coach. However I'll give him the nod over Richt due to his perfect season.

1. Meyer
2. Miles
3. Saban
4. Spurrier
5. Tubberwear
6. Richt
7. Nutt
8. Fulmer
9. Petrino
10. Croom
11. Brooks
12. Johnson

At this point I think that's almost a fair list. Meyer and Miles at least right now are pretty close. Although Miles has the better overall record and conference record.:hihi: But no doubt that Meyer is a good coach and that's a lot of good coaches to have to rank so it's not easy at all. In my list I was going off the last couple of years and also trying to look at the upcoming years with recruiting and such. Saban has been doing well in that area but so are a lot of the other teams. The next three years are going to tell a lot about all of the coaches obviously and it may be easier should they all still be at their respective programs.

Honestly I'm really pulling for Croom, I think he is a good coach and he has the program going in the right direction.

I doubt that any one coach has put more talent in college football than Richt since he's been at UGA. I recall an article a couple years ago that placed UGA just above Miami, Texas and USC in terms of current players in the NFL in a range of the last few years. He's had more than enough talent to win a MNC.

That is a good point because Georgia has been stacked in recent years, particularly on defense.
The counter would be that he has a 1-loss season, 2 conference titles, and 2 other division titles after taking over a program in worse shape then the one Miles took over.

Nonetheless, I agree that its hard to put Miles as low as Finebaum has him. 20-6 in 3 seasons is damn good

Well isn't that part of being a college football coach, recruiting? Georgia gets some pretty good players every year, so I'm not sure they can complain about a lack of talent. And if nobody did have the talent of LSU this year then that's their own fault.

Well first off, I bleed purple and gold so my opinion may be a little biased. Just a little though. I would put Spurrier and Meyer deffinately in front of Miles. I'd also probably throw Tubberville up there also. Spurrier because of his past years at Florida. Florida was a juggernaut when he was there. In a sense he's starting to turn S.C. into a big time contender. The only thing slowing him down is recruiting in that region is pretty hard. Meyer is only a year away from becoming a constant powerhouse. I hate the Gators because its been ingrained in my head since I was a child but damn I sure do not ever take that team for granted. Tubberville builds strong defenses year after year and is in need of a slight offensive improvement before he makes a charge at the top 5.

I think a coach's integrity must be taken into account in these ratings. But that's just me. If the players respect the coach they will play better. (Speaking of Saban) I think we've seen that with our own Saints. I doubt that Haslett could've gotten the same results with S.P.'s team. SP just always seems to try and do the right thing. Anyway, that's just my take on it. Right or wrong that's just how I perceive it.

Croom deserves to be higher than anyone so far has placed him. He coached his tail off this year. If we're giving out a report card for this year alone, Croom is top five easy.

Petrino is last. What has he done so far? Taken a Louisville through the Big East undefeated one season and racked up yards and points? He's the June Jones of the East.

I do like Croom. He seems to connect with his players in a way that most coaches can't.

Can't put Meyer ahead of Miles. Florida and LSU recruit close to the same level of talent nearly every year. Both have been in the SEC the same amount of time, so the "Miles was winning with Saban's talent" argument holds no water, since Meyer was winning with Zooks talent.

Miles is 2-1 vs. Meyer, with a better overall and conference record. Also with more division titles.

No wonder why Saban's so high on Finebaum's list though. The last Bama radio show personality who wasn't so pro-Bama was fired.

There are so many different elements to being a "good head coach" in the SEC that it's next to impossible to find a "ranking" of them that you'd be satisfied with.

Miles is really not a very good X's and O's guy and frankly I question his gameday coaching as well (que the flock of LSU fans pecking at my eyeballs) but he instills a really great attitude in his teams, who always seem to be mentally and physically tough.

Urban Meyer is, arguably, the best X's and O's guy and a very good recruiter, but the word getting out now is he has a horrible time managing his staff and there's a lot of spin about his recruiting being underhanded (promising things to players he has zero intention of fufilling). Warts we never saw before because he never hung around for more then 3 years.

So who is better? They do very different things, both very well, and have both had success.

Croom deserves to be near the bottom. I know i'm a UM fan but look at it objectively. They beat an Auburn team who didn't have 6 of their defensive starters and had an uncharacteristically bad day by Cox, with 5 turnovers. That was the lowpoint for Auburn. They beat Kentucky after emotional overtime games against LSU and Florida. They barely beat a terrible UAB team, they beat Tulane, and they beat Gardner-Webb. Ole Miss was thoroughly dominating the game until a Derrick Pegues punt return and an idiotic 4th and 1 by Orgeron.

That was a bad team that got real lucky. And the best part of it was the defense under Ellis Johnson, and he's gone now. Croom is a supposedly offensive coach with the 113th offense in the NCAA, and winning is all on his shoulders now. And I seriously doubt he'll get the same breaks he got in 2007.

Oh and if I ranked them anyways (after just saying I couldn't)

The best
1. Steve Spurrier
2. Tommy Tuberville
------------
Close, but missing that "big game" quality
3. Mark Richt
------------
Very good with significant warts
4. Les Miles
5. Urban Meyer
6. Nick Saban
------------
Boring, solid
7. Houston Nutt
8. Phil Fulmer
------------
Would near the top in most other conferences
9. Rich Brooks
10. Bobby Petrino
11. Bobby Johnson
-----------
One of these is not like the others, one of these just doesn't belong
12. Sylvester Croom
