TAMPA, Fla. – The New Orleans Saints found themselves on the wrong side of the law on Sunday night.
From start to finish, the Saints crippled themselves with penalties, racking up flags on both sides of the ball in a game New Orleans badly needed against a Tampa Bay team tied for the NFC South lead.
New Orleans drew a season-high 13 penalties for 104 yards in a crushing 16-11 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a game that left the Saints seeing yellow in the immediate aftermath.
"The penalties certainly hurt us," Saints head coach Sean Payton said. "I think it ended up being really the difference. When we watch this tape, we're going to see it come up time and time again."
Unlike last season, when former cornerback Brandon Browner was often at the center of penalty-related problems for the Saints, the infractions were spread around the entire roster in Raymond James Stadium.
