Here comes one of my typical "numbers should be put into context" posts. Let's say that the Saints are ahead by 4 points with five seconds left. The opposing QB, who is out of timeouts, throws a Hail Mary pass to the Saints 5 yard line, with the inevitable interference call. The opposing team throws another pass, but time runs out. The Hail Mary had a good chance of being completed. Isn't that a "good penalty?" One could argue that there must have been a busted coverage on the Hail Mary pass, but PFF would have to determine whose fault it was. And maybe more than one DB messed up.
Remember the play where PI was called on the wrong Tampa Bay DB? Does PFF account for that?
What about interceptions where the receiver tips the ball to a DB? Or the reciever just drops it. Does the QB lose PFF points for those cases?
I'll stop there.
