The New Orleans Saints may have struck gold with Erik McCoy, their top pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. McCoy hasn’t just filled in for Max Unger after the Saints’ longtime center retired — he’s been an upgrade. According to the analysts at Pro Football Focus, McCoy is one of the ten best rookies on the year so far.
What’s most impressive isn’t that McCoy is outperforming the rest of the rookie class (including centers drafted ahead of him like Minnesota Vikings first-round pick Garrett Bradbury, and Elgton Jenkins, who the Green Bay Packers picked four spots before the Saints traded up to get McCoy, only to move Jenkins to left guard despite his college success at center). McCoy is playing like a top-five center throughout the entire NFL. Here’s what PFF analyst Anthony Treash wrote about McCoy’s first month-and-a-half on the job:
