Welcome to the second major tournament of the 2022 golf season. The big stories once again are Tiger & Phil… but for very different reasons.
Tiger is shooting for what some are considering to be ‘the impossible dream’ as he continues to battle back from the severe injuries sustained in a car accident about 15 months ago. No doubt a lot of folks will tune in for his attempt at major #16.
However the defending champ Phil Mickelson is in full blown damage control mode as he has officially pulled out of this second major due to the comments he made concerning the Saudi-backed LIV Golf Tour as well as his desire to be part of the large cash payouts for the tour players who move to support the new league. There is disappointment for sure by the PGA that Phil is a scratch, but there are still plenty of good storylines to follow for this 104th edition of the PGA Championship.
To boost the interest in this year’s tournament, the PGA has assembled some very notable groups for the first two days at Southern Hills in Tulsa, OK. No doubt the majority of the patrons (and TV cameras) will be attached to the threesome of Woods, McIlroy, & Spieth. Should all three make the cut & be in contention, it could turn out to be an unforgettable championship to follow.
Many experts feel that the smart money should probably be on the current #1 ranked golfer, Scottie Scheffler. But perhaps the previous #1 player John Rahm can regain his magic on the storied layout. Either way, it appears that there will be good reasons to be excited for this year’s edition of the PGA Championship!
