Awesome work --kudos to all of you.

Hello everyone...I hope rookies and newcomers are welcome!

With some hesitation I offer my first contribution. I thought the composition was powerful...at least to me. No one else seems to be moved by it though, like it hit me. Maybe it goes back to my childhood and growing up with an older Uncle confined to a chair when he was 16.

btw...I tried to embed like you all are doing but can't seem to make that work. Maybe this link will go there.

Here's a before and after look of how I like to edit sport portraits to make them look more dynamic. I tend to go for an edit that has more sharpness/clarity, along with a bit more vibrance. It's pretty much the opposite way I like to edit bridals and engagement photos.

It can be a lot to digest at first. With many labs it's just sRGB and upload though. The main pitfalls are working with a poorly adjusted monitor or with the wrong color space. That's why test prints are often a good idea.

I use a 27" iMac to process my photos. Do you have a preferred monitor calibration software that you use?

Another edit from my project.

Awesome shots as usual Severum!

Thanks, yours are looking good as well. I had assumed you were using more pronounced flash than what your edit shows.

Welcome to the thread and feel free to share frequently. As Brennan noted, just click the arrow on the bottom right of your image and copy the embed or BB code. Long sides should be around 800 to 1000 for optimal viewing.

I use a Datacolor Spyder. The X-Rite options seem well reviewed also. Dynamic color/brightness adjustment might vary by product, but I prefer to skip that and just maintain consistent room brightness. I assume your iMac features their IPS display which definitely helps compared to lesser panels.

Thanks, I used a Flashpoint Streaklight off camera flash that was sitting on the ground and pointed up at her. I semi diffused it and only used about 1/32 power then brought the brightness up in lightroom. I don't like to kill the original shots with too much flash.

Speaking of printing services, I just received some photos from mpix, printed on metal. I'm not exactly happy with the results. The whites are washed out and appear too white and lacking color from the original. I'm wondering if I should contact them about it and whether they'd be willing to do anything. It's a bit frustrating.

Honestly not sure how mpix works. But just curious as to how the print looks. Could you post a pic of it?

I'm also unfamiliar with Mpix, but I would definitely contact them to try and get it resolved. Their FAQ seems to indicate they will do replacement prints. Did they perform color correction? Did you use Mpix or MpixPro? Were the files sRGB?

I've heard of similar low contrast issues with matte and semi-gloss metal, but glossy prints usually increase contrast and darkness a bit. You could post (or PM) links to the actual files you sent to be printed so we could see if they display correctly.

This photo is the main one that I'm having an issue with. The white at the top right is a reflection of the sky in a thermal pool run off in Yellowstone. We have a series of photos from that spot that my wife wanted printed, mostly for the colors. This one is my least favorite and is not particularly in focus, but I digress. The printed version seems a bit more washed out at the top and loses a lot of sharpness altogether. It's weird. But maybe it's just going from seeing it on my monitor and blown up a bit. It's not horrible when looking at it casually from the room. And it's definitely more pronounced with artificial light vs just sunlight in the room.

I don't know. The more I look at it, the more I think it's just a result of blowing up an imperfect image.
