New Orleans not awarded compensatory draft picks

PHOENIX -- As Las Vegas police recommended that Tennessee cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones face three criminal charges, including one count of felony coercion in relation to an altercation at a gentleman's club the weekend of the NBA All-Star Game, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday the league would not have a new player conduct policy in place by the end of the annual owner's meeting this week.
Instead, Goodell said he hopes to have new guidelines for player conduct and to make some decisions regarding disciplinary action in several cases -- quite possibly including Jones -- before the April 28-29 draft.
"It's a complicated issue," Goodell said Monday, "and there are no simple answers. We want to find out what is working well with the clubs and what is not working, get a set of 'best practices' so they can implement them on a local basis."
NFL players, and their union head, Gene Upshaw, have almost universally supported Goodell's move toward a new player conduct policy that carries harsher penalties for law-breakers.
