Players Jumping Ship (1 Viewer)

We’re choosing not to pay that much to players who performed poorly for us.

Every team has to make decisions like this. Your beloved Jaguars let Jawaan Taylor go.
I wouldn’t say that Onyemata and Elliss played poorly. Onyemata was down last season but he’s been pretty good at a clear position of weakness. I can understand Elliss bring let go because he wouldn’t start in our nickel.

Taylor was let go because he wasn’t very good and chose to finally put up an average season during a contract year and Lawrence is making everyone look like a superstar. The Jags drafted Walker Little in the 2nd round a few years ago and should play just as well (probably better).

DT is concerning. The Saints ability to stop the run has been really good the past 5+ year, but it has been slipping the last 1+. The Saints history with drafting DT has NOT been good. Who was the last Saints DT that earned a second contract (beside Onyemata)? They needed to find a way to at least get one contributor in FA, and with each passing far that are pigeonholing themselves into being forced to draft based on need

I think the Jags felt the same way about Taylor that the Saints felt about the players they let walk. That’s kinda the point. Every team makes decisions like this.

Onyemata hasn’t been the same player since the PED suspension. Maybe a coincidence. But whatever it is, the Saints set a price point and let him walk despite knowing they would incur dead money for doing so. That decision was about a lot more than the cap since they took on the dead money head on.

Losing these defensive FAs is not dire. All we have to do is beef up our offense and light up the scoreboard on them. Thus making their signings look like a bad investment. You’re welcome

Right! It looks like as it stands now...

  • DT David Onyemata. Onyemata agreed on a three-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons averaging $11.6 million per year, which is valued as a fourth-round pick.
  • DT Shy Tuttle. Tuttle agreed to terms on a three-year deal with the Carolina Panthers that averages out to $6.5 million per year, which is projected as a sixth-round pick.
  • DE Marcus Davenport. Davenport reached an agreement with the Minnesota Vikings on a one-year, $13 million contract offer, which is projected to be a fourth-round pick.
  • LB Kaden Elliss. Elliss and the Atlanta Falcons agreed to terms on a free agent contract valued at $7.1 million per year, which projects at a sixth-round pick.
Kaden Ellis was a bargain. We should have matched that. He may have just wanted to leave

It’s not about these players necessarily. You have to have someone to play the positions. If our guys were 1st day of free agency worthy and we have to wait for two week worthy guys or rookies then instead of getting an upgrade at the position, we’re probably going to get worse. Certainly less experienced.
Was Jairus Byrd 1st day of free agency worthy in 2014? How about Kurt Coleman in 2018?

And yes, you do need players to play the positions, however going out and signing a player to an expensive deal the first day of free agency doesn’t guarantee that move will pan out anymore than signing a player a few days into the next wave of free agency.

The front office has a value set on all of our free agents (both incoming and outgoing) and they won’t deviate much from it. We like to let the market set itself and work from there vs. overspending for a player that might not fit. With how well we’ve drafted replenishing talent the last ~7 years, we’re afforded that luxury. Teams like the Falcons and Panthers haven’t drafted as well and have to shell out bigger contracts to lure and land prospective free agents.

While I would’ve liked to keep some of the guys we lost in free agency, you can’t deny that our run defense last year was gaudy at best (finishing in the bottom-half or bottom-third of the league in nearly every category) compared to previous years of finishing in the top-third or even top-5. How would re-signing most of those players to overpriced deals just to keep them make the run defense better in 2023?
